18  Exchange money at airport  + € 1000 = no handling charge  KEEP THE RECEIPT  ATM’s available to withdraw money  Check with your bank whether your card works in China  DON’T exchange money on the street (fake!)  Keep your money (other valuables safe), but don’t hide it too well  Tip: already think about what you want to spend there. 18 Money € 1 approximately 10 RMB (2008)

20 20 Communication  Calling home (gf, mum, …)  Check your provider if it’s possible (usually it is, but possibly you need to activate it first)  Check your phone (older models can give problems)  Quite expensive  buy card in China ( +/-100 RMB) (don’t forget to give your number to your friends)  Internet cafés everywhere  This is very cheep  QWERTY

22 22 Food  Try the Chinese food. It’s really tasty (most of it anyway). Give feedback to Zhang Lin  Many dishes (so you will like something)  Breakfast is a bit less, but still ok

24  There are alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages:  Tea  Soda (Fanta, Cola, Sprite, …)  Water  …  Wine  Beer  Rice wine  … Don’t be drunk on the streets! 24 Drinks

26  We travel a lot  Organized trips: GroupT takes care of transport Plane, bus, train (to Beijing), subway, …  Free hours: that’s up to you  Taxi, subway, on foot  Taxi = cheap: - show hotel address card - get receipt - race  Subway: very crowded, but fun  On foot: - ask directions ;) - Careful when crossing the streets 26 Transportation

27 Do’s:  Try the food, it’s good  Ask for directions (even when you know the way)  Take the subway and taxi (try racing)  Take the taxi mopeds (taxi brommerkes)  Talk to the locals and the students  Try to get the best price for stuff  Try to get Hanny’s flag (at your own risk!)  … 27 Extra stuff: do’s and don'ts
