2 Who is Flip Ziedses Des Plantes? What is the workshop about? different kinds of design competitions the advantages that can be gained by joining (and winning) competitions. I will show examples of some of his own entries for competitions and awards I’ve won. you will receive useful tips and tricks about how to select a competition, prepare your entry and impress the jury. the workshop will be given in two parts: –during the first workshop (week 5) you will be asked to select a competition that you might want to join. –in the second workshop (Midterm IDentity Week) you’ll get the opportunity to receive feedback on your competition entry.

4 Why joining a design competitions? Opportunities: gaining design experience exposure/ publicity/ interesting for your resume/ curriculum vitae getting your entry (product/service) produced/ on market prize money extra opportunity: join design competitions when you are student

Ze hebben hard gewerkt aan deze memorybox, bedoeld om ouderen uit hun sociaal isolement te halen. Het levert ze 41.500 euro op waarmee ze het ontwerp in de markt kunnen zetten. Prize € 41.500,-

13 Weigh up the pros and cons before joining a design competition what is the mission and intention of the organization? does the Intellectual Property (IP/IE) of my entry stay with me? TU/e work: IP of TU/e (mind IP of team members) own work: IP will be yours do I have to pay an entry fee? is the amount of work that is asked doable within the available time enough publicity (exhibition, magazines etc.)? is the prize interesting?

19 Tips for your entry (1/5) read the competition regulations carefully mind the deadlines and make a planning if you have questions: do contact the competition organization before starting mind the format and presentation restrictions (digital and print)

20 Tips for your entry (2/5) make sure everything on your presentation is clear: use clear and attractive images of your design simple explanation of the problem statement, your solution, USP and how your design works don’t use a lot of text unless this is asked make high (photo) quality prints and paste them on firm foam board

21 Tips for your entry (3/5) make a checklist to see if your entry is complete if you are not able to deliver all: contact organization and explain to jury check the competition regulations if your entry should be anonymous try to imagine or find out how and where the jury gathers: find out if you can set up the entry presentation yourself

22 Tips for your entry (4/5) make your entry comfortable to handle for the organization good transport packaging for your presentation and model include a short manual for the organization how to set up your presentation make your entry easy presentable (e.g. use foam board standards) In case of movie: ask organization make your entry comfortable to handle for the jury number the presentation boards of your entry make hand outs for the jury

23 Tips for your entry (5/5) Impress the jury by delivering more than is asked (without breaking the restrictions)

24 Main advise for today: join a competition and profit from the opportunities!!!!!
