Translation The A an De/het Een Before consonants Een Before vowels (e,i,o,a, u) *Let op: het gaat om de uitspraak!

Use Use “the” to indicate: A building A specific meal A specific season E.g.: ‘The spring of 1990.’ No ‘the’ when referring to: The use of a building Meals in general Seasons Names + buildings, streets etc.

Also Don’t use ‘the’ after the following words: Most Next Last E.g.: “Most children like ice cream.”

Use a/an for: A profession, religion, ranks etc ‘I am a biologist.’ Exclamations ‘What a wonderful day!’

Some examples Ik ben tuinman. In de zomer. Hij ging naar de gevangenis. We ontmoeren elkaar op het centraal station. I am a gardener. In summer. He went to prison. We’ll meet at central station.
