1 American Lit: Week 9 Week’s Agenda: Finalize body paragraphs today.
Tuesday: Introduction Paragraph Workshop Wednesday: Conclusion Paragraph Workshop Thursday/Friday Lab Days: typing/revising/proofreading TYPED ESSAY DUE MONDAY 9/30/13

2 Am Lit: Do Now 9/30/13 Turn in your Do Nows from Week 8: US MAIL BOX
In sentence form, tell me everything/anything you know about writing a “body paragraph.”

3 Am Lit Success Today Means
You can take your outline and develop three body paragraphs in full sentence form. Your body paragraphs should start with a transition, have a topic sentence, then conclusion/hook transition.

4 Can you find the “Hook transition”?
My second goal for this class, is to pay attention and turn in 90% of my work by the end of the week when it is due. To be able to get my work done and to turn it in, I should really pay attention to the teacher and focus on work first and not on my friends. Maybe, once I have my work done and turned in if the teacher allows talking but quietly with classmates, then I should wait until my friends are done with their work, so I don’t distract them while talking. I shouldn’t allow myself to get off guard and off track by socializing with my friends. To succeed in English class is to really work hard, pay attention and to put in the effort. Although, this goal is my second, my last goal to help me pass English is to be in class on time 97% of the semester.

5 Individual Activity Pick a body paragraph from Chris P. Bacon’s essay.
Underline the “Topic Sentence” Number each “example” or “detail” that help support the topic sentence. Circle an transition sentences/words at the beginning or end of the paragraph Cross out any sentence that doesn’t fit the topic of the paragraph

6 Small Group/Solo Work 9/25/13
Using the BLT Paragraph G.O. if necessary, develop your body paragraphs making sure to include transitions, topic sentences. HW: Write an introduction paragraph for your essay. Plus, at least three body paragraphs in full sentence form if you did not finish.

7 Am. Lit. DO NOW: 10/1/13 Take an Introduction Paragraph Handout.
If you have your introduction paragraph: If you have a “Hook” opening, copy your “hook” into the blank lines under the type. Then try to create another way to start your intro using one of the other strategies No Homework/No hook in your intro Create two “hooks” to start your intro. Use two different strategies

8 Success Today Means You can demonstrate via writing that you can create an introduction paragraph that has a hook/attention gainer, background/transition information, and a thesis statement (thesis + three main ideas)

9 Introductions Elements of Introductions: Hook (aka Attention Gainer)
Some type of background information (what we need to know to understand the situation you want to argue about) Thesis Statement Thesis statement= stance plus three main reasons

10 Introductions “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal” explains Henry Ford. This quote by Henry Ford, speaks to me in a away when I have a goal, I set my mind to it and create steps to make it to my goal. Once, something comes upon my path that has nothing to do with me reaching my goal. When I pay attention to it for to long, my goal begins to fade and drop. My mind will become stressed and cluttered with things that I let myself get distracted by and letting myself not succeed towards my goal. But, this year for this semester for English 10 to earn a B. My smart goals to get that far are to raise my hand at least once each day, to get help and to participate with the class, to turn in 90% of my work each week and I will have to maintain a 97% of attendance for English 10 to be able to earn a B. Find the attention gainer, the background/transition, the thesis, the main points

11 Tuesday Homework Write a conclusion paragraph for your essay.
Finish your introduction paragraph if you did not finish in class

12 Am Lit DO NOW 10/2/13 First, write out your thesis statement (one sentence if possible with your stance and your main reasons) Once you have answered, come get a Conclusion Paragraph Handout. Then use it to answer the following question (add to your Do Now): what conclusion strategy does Chris P. Bacon use?

13 Chris P. Bacon’s conclusion
Now my belief is, that all of Avenal’s High School students should be able to go off campus during lunch and enjoy their own meals if you support my belief or would like to give your opinion on the topic please join me in attend the meeting at the west gym on Friday July 27, 2015 at 4:00p.m.

14 Conclusion Strategies
Restate the thesis. Original thesis from Intro paragraph: “In order to earn an A in English 10, I will turn in 90% of my homework, raise my hand in class at least once a week, and I will maintain a 99% attendance rate” Restated: “If I turn in almost all of my homework, make sure that I am always present and actively participating everyday in class, I will achieve my goal of earning an A in English 10.”

15 Success Today Means You can write a conclusion paragraph that includes: Restating the thesis and main points ideas Uses a conclusion strategy like “Call to Action” or “Full Circle Ending”

16 What strategy is used in this one?
In conclusion if I stay out of trouble most of the time, do almost all of my class/homework, and study hard everyday. I believe I can accomplish my goal of getting an A in English 10. So I will keep working hard until I succeed, no matter how hard it gets, and I can take my eyes of my goal or get distracted. And in the end of it all I will succeed bye passing over to English 10 semester 2, and so on so forth.

17 Here is the matching Intro
“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal” explains Henry Ford. This quote by Henry Ford, speaks to me in a away when I have a goal, I set my mind to it and create steps to make it to my goal. Once, something comes upon my path that has nothing to do with me reaching my goal. When I pay attention to it for to long, my goal begins to fade and drop.
