Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Approaching the exam: Before the exam  Study with others  Test each other (one with the book, the other(s) must answer)  Check each other’s answers to possible open questions and discuss them  Make a “crib sheet” (spiek briefje)  Make a check list of what you have to bring to the exam

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media To bring check-list Collegecard At least 2 pens Pencil Dummy

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Approaching the exam: The day of the exam  Get a good night’s sleep (do not stay up all night “cramming”)  Make sure you go through your checklist before leaving home (have you got everything?)  Try to relax a little before the exam  Read through your spiek briefje  Get to the exam room at least 10 minutes before the start time

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Approaching the exam: The multiple-choice exam  Read the paper first, note your answers in pencil on the question sheet  Start to fill in the answer sheet  Ask yourself is this the right answer?  Check your answer sheet at least once  If in doubt look the other possible answers: are they actually possible, are they logical?

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Approaching the exam: The missing words questions  Missing words questions are similar to multiple- choice, but we do not provide you with the answer  Again read all questions first and try to think of the right answers  Note them on your question sheet  Read both the English and Dutch versions of the questions  Write your answers on the answer sheet  You can answer in Dutch or English (or a combination)  The answers MUST be in the right order to count

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Approaching the exam: The open question  Open questions are used to test deeper understanding of key concepts  They are a form of “essay” and so should be structured (beginning, middle, end)  The open question will ask you to define a concept in your own words or to defend a position adopted in the UCD course  Read the question carefully first and ask yourself:  What is this question asking me?  How many parts are there to this question?  What is the answer to each part of the question  Once you have done this write a small plan on the question sheet outlining the answer you plan to write to the question  Make sure you note the answers to each part of the question  Answer the question making sure you refer back to your notes  Look out for the following:  “In your own words”  “Explain why you think this”  “Give arguments for your answer”

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media At the end of the exam  Check your answers if you have time  Make sure your name, class and student number are on all sheets (there will be space for them)

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Proeftentamen answers: Multiple- choice 1.C 2.B 3.D 4.B 5.B 6.A 7.B 8.D

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Proeftentamen answers: Missing words 1.Task / goal 2.User / requirements / interaction 3.Client / user / customer 4.Leading / stories

Hogeschool van Amsterdam Interactieve Media Important elements of open question  The question is asking you to use your knowledge of UCD from the course to build an argument for why UCD is important  The key things that need to be mentioned to try to justify UCD to this client are:  That there is a difference between the customer and the user - products need to be designed to allow users to achieve their goals (which are often different from customer goals). UCD allows you to capture these requirements  If they want a business that is sustainable, they want happy customers AND happy users, as happy users make future customers  In addition you could mention:  Capturing user requirements allows for better products overall  UCD does allow you to understand customer needs too - so you can kill two birds with one stone (twee vliegen in een klap)
