1 Question Cognition The “QC” Plan A presentation for the famous Ammons Middle School Students

2 Guiding Strategy cont’d
Whole Language Approach Reading is the KEY! Even more important than Math Reading is how the students understand the question, therefore:

3 The QC Plan: In Cursive!! 3 Step Problem-Solving Approach
I. In order to find ________, when given __________, I would _______________. II. (Show the work) III. The answer is::

4 “The QC Plan; Question Cognition”
I. Write what the question want answered, write what information is given; then write your plan on how you would use it to find the answer. Draw a picture of the problem if appropriate, underline key words and information. II. Show all calculations with formulas. III. Show answer clearly in the right spot with the answer boxed in.

5 “The QC Plan cont’d” Explanations should always be in complete sentences. The writing must be legible, dark enough, & grammatically correct. Did we mention IN CURSIVE?! Drawing a picture really is worth a thousand words! Underline key words/information

6 “The QC Plan- Your Turn”
Example: If a rectangle has an area of 40 square yards, and a length of 8 yards, how many feet wide is the rectangle? Step I: In order to find how many feet wide a rectangle with an area of 40 square yards and a length of 8 yards is, I would use the formula: L x W = A, then substitute 40 for A and 8 for L. Then I would convert the answer to feet by multiplying by 3. Step II: 8 x W = 40 (Divide both sides by 8) W = 5 (yards, not feet) 5 x 3 = 15 feet Step III: The answer is 15 feet.

7 Get Your Parents to Help
Have them make you speak in complete sentences. Explain at least one math problem per night in this format. Use the FCAT Explorer questions as the resource, all students have to do all the questions by FCAT Test time.

8 “Question Cognition: The QC Plan”
Designed for the award-winning math students at Ammons Middle It’s not about passing…. It’s about being the BEST!
