1 __ Zn + ___ CuSO4  __ Cu + __ ZnSO4
Unit 3 Chemical Reactions 3.4 How do we use the Activity Series Table to predict if a reaction will take place? February 8, 2010 Do Now: Balance equations if needed. Then, indicate whether the reaction is synthesis, decomposition, single or double replacement. AIM: How can you predict if a reaction takes place using the activity series? __ Zn + ___ CuSO4  __ Cu + __ ZnSO4 __ ZnCl2 + __ KOH  __ Zn(OH)2 + __ KCl J (Single Replacement) (Double Replacement)

2 ACTIVITY SERIES AND SINGLE REPLACEMENT REACTIONS
USE Table J, Activity Series in the Reference Table

3 HOW TO USE TABLE J? Zn + Cu(NO3)2  Cu + Zn(NO3)2 Type of reaction:
Single Replacement

4 Zn + Cu(NO3)2  Cu + Zn(NO3)2 Zn Cu Zn is a metal Zn is above Cu
FIRST COLUMN OF TABLE J Indicate the single element in the reactants in the reaction 2. Indicate the first element in the reactants that is bonded to other elements 3. If the single element in a single replacement reaction is a metal, look at 1st column of table J. 4. REACTION OR NO REACTION? If the single metal is listed above the metal in the compound, the reaction will take place. Zn Cu Zn is a metal Zn is above Cu

5 EXPLANATION Zn + Cu(NO3)2  Cu + Zn(NO3)2 = REACTION WHY?
Zn is above Cu on the table. Therefore, Zn will react with a compound of copper such as Cu(NO3)2 and displace/replace Cu

6 NOTE Cu + Zn(NO3)2 will result in…. no reaction
WHY is there no reaction? Cu is below Zn, it will not react with compounds of Zn

7 LET’S TRY SOME 1) Pb + AgNO3  Ag + Pb(NO3)2 ___________________
2) Ni + ZnSO4  NiSO4 + Zn ___________________ reaction Because Ag is below Pb on Table J no reaction Because ZN is above Ni on Table J

8 What’s Up with Hydrogen hanging
On the metals’ side?

9 WHAT’S UP WITH HYDROGEN HANGING ON THE METAL’S SIDE?
One element that is in this column that is not a metal is hydrogen. All metals above hydrogen will react and displace hydrogen RESULT hydrogen gas is formed

10 LET’S TRY SOME Mg + 2HCl  H2 + MgCl2 = REACTION WHY?
Mg is above H on the table. Therefore, Mg will react with a compound of hydrogen such as HCl and displace/replace H

11 LET’S TRY SOME Ca + H2O  Ca(OH)2 + H2 ________________
2) Cu + H2O  Cu(OH)2 + H ________________ No reaction Because Ca is above H on Table J reaction Because Cu is below H on Table J

12 WHEN TO USE THE SECOND COLUMN OF TABLE J?

13 WHEN TO USE IT? If the single element in a single replacement reaction is a non-metal (specifically a halogen), look at second column of table J. A nonmetal will replace a less active nonmetal in a compound (the one that is higher up will react with the one that is lower)

14 F2 + 2NaCl  Cl2 + 2NaF What is the most reactive nonmetal according to the table? _____________ Fluorine will react with anything below it and displace it. FLUORINE REACTION WILL HAPPEN REVERSE: NO, because chlorine is below fluorine on the list, it will not replace fluorine in a compound. Cl2 + NaF  NO REACTION

15 Complete the Independent Practice
-IP will be collected at the end of class!!! WORK ON UNIT 1 IN THE HOMEOWORK PACKET Make up LABS!! Come see me if you are missing any Work on 2.3 Independent Practice from yesterday…..
