What is fact and what is fiction? On your tables you need to decide what you think is likely to happen and what you think is made up. Create a poster to display the real risks to London. Explain why not all the risks are realistic. What can be done to help reduce the risks?
15
Research Task We have already identified the risks that London faces. But what is London doing to prevent risks? What are individuals doing? What are developers doing? What would you do if it was your choice? Research on the internet for the answers to these questions.
16
London Flood Risk Management Where development in areas at risk from flooding is permitted, the Mayor will with boroughs and other agencies manage the existing risk of flooding, and the future increased risk and consequences of flooding as a result of climate change, by:
17
Strategies Protecting the existing flood defences Setting permanent built development back from existing flood defences to allow for the management, maintenance and upgrading of those defences All defences are to be undertaken in a sustainable and cost effective way Make sure buildings are designed to be flood resilient
18
Strategies cont… Establish flood warning and emergency procedures Identify areas for flood risk management, including the creation of new floodplain or the restoration of all or part of the natural floodplain to its original function The mayor and other agencies should take into account other studies
19
Other Studies Thames Estuary 2100 Study, The Regional Flood Risk Appraisal The Thames Catchment Flood Management Plan.
20
Case Study Find organisations, programs, management techniques, committees etc Find out what they are doing to manage the threats to London with examples including facts and figures. Do not simply copy and paste! How useful do you think these individual management strategies are?
21
Task So from all the case studies we have done so far how are risks to cities in MEDCs different from risks to cities in LEDCs? How are the solutions different? Essay question (20 marks) Discuss and then conclude with your reasons why.
