Simple Sentence = independent clause that is a complete thought.
Compound Sentence = 2 ind. cl. joined by a coordinating conj. or a semicolon (;).
Sentence, FANBOY sentence.
Sentence; sentence.
Complex Sentence.
At least one independent CL and a simple sentence.

2. Warm Up - Writer’s Notebook – Title: “Opener, Interrupter, Closer”
Copy the following sentence patterns down:
Opener, sentence.
Sent, interrupter, ence.
Sentence closer.
Sentence = independent clause
Opener, interrupter, closer = dependent clauses, & phrases

3. Sentence Pattern Examples:
Before I go to work each morning, I stop at Starbucks for coffee.
I stop at Starbucks, before I go to work each morning, for coffee.
I stop at Starbucks for coffee, before I go to work each morning.

4. Opener, sentence. Sentence Patterns Example:
Before I go to work each morning, I stop at Starbucks for coffee.

5. I stop at Starbucks, before I go to work each morning, for coffee.
Sentence Patterns
Sent, interrupter, ence.
Example:
I stop at Starbucks, before I go to work each morning, for coffee.

6. Sentence Patterns
Sentence closer.
Example:
I stop at Starbucks for coffee before I go to work each morning.

7. Warm-Up – Writer’s Notebook Title: “Dependent Clauses”
Write: AAAWWUBBIS vertically and fill in the correct word next to each letter.
Using the sentence patterns (opener, interrupter, closer), compose three (3) complex sentences using an AAAWWUBBIS word (subordinating conjunction) to create the dependent clause.
Underline the dependent clause and circle the punctuation for each sentence.
