2 This class will give you an overview of eBooks and electronic Audiobooks available from the Library. We will also explain the basic hardware and software requirements for downloading audiobooks from the library, and have a brief demonstration of the process.

5 eBooks and Audiobooks If you have a cell phone, please turn it off during the class, or set it to silent mode. If you must use your cell phone during the class, please step outside.

7 eBooks: Introduction eBooks are books that can be read on an electronic device such as a computer, an iPod, or a special eBook reader like Amazons Kindle.

8 eBooks: Introduction eBooks may be available as PDFs (Portable Document Format), or they may be formatted and displayed in a special format available only to specific software, such as would be used on an eBook reader.

9 eBooks: Introduction eBooks from the library are available in both PDF format and a proprietary format used by NetLibrary, one of the Librarys eBook providers.

10 eBooks: Introduction eBooks in PDF format can be read online, or downloaded to your computer for later reading. Many publishers sell PDF versions of books, which can be downloaded once they are paid for.

11 eBooks: Introduction The Library has eBooks available through NetLibrary and Gale Virtual Reference Library.

12 eBooks: Introduction These eBooks are available to Library patrons for viewing and downloading. Both the Gale and NetLibrary collections may be freely accessed within the Library, but a library card is required to access them outside the Library.

14 How to Find eBooks Searching for eBooks begins at the librarys web site

15 How to Find eBooks Notice that eBooks can also be found in the Online Catalog From this page, you can go to either the Gale Virtual Reference Library or NetLibrary

16 How to Find eBooks If you are accessing the Gale Virtual Reference Library from home you will need to enter your library card number.

17 How to Find eBooks You can find books by using the search box or by expanding the categories to select a book

18 How to Find eBooks You can also do an advanced search to limit the results

19 How to Find eBooks When you select an article in one of the Virtual Reference books, you will have different options for reading it.

20 How to Find eBooks NetLibrary has a wider selection of books, with different options.

21 How to Find eBooks NetLibrarys basic search allows searching by Keyword, Title, Author, Subject, or the default Full-Text. You can change the search option by clicking on the drop down menu.

22 How to Find eBooks The results will have the words highlighted (this was a title search for cookbook)

23 How to Find eBooks Each result will have a summary from the book, and options to view the book, see more details, or add it to your Favorites (requires a NetLibrary account).

25 NetLibrary Accounts If you do not have a library card, you can access NetLibrary outside of the Library by creating an account from a computer inside the library.

26 NetLibrary Accounts Note: you will need an email account in order to complete the registration. If you have a library card, a NetLibrary account is optional.

27 NetLibrary Accounts Once you have an account, you will have access to the Librarys NetLibrary collection from anywhere. Having a NetLibrary account will also allow you to maintain a favorites list.

28 NetLibrary Accounts If you are accessing NetLibrary from inside the Library, you do not have to log in.

30 NetLibrary: Checkout When you click on the link to view a NetLibrary ebook, you are checking out the book, and will see a book view like this.

31 NetLibrary: Checkout Clicking on a link in the left column will display the first page of that section on the right.

32 NetLibrary: Checkout You can also browse through the pages by clicking on the Next button at the top of the viewer.

33 NetLibrary: Checkout You can search within the book by using the search box at the bottom of the left column

34 NetLibrary: Checkout Click on the View this Page link in the results listed to view the page with the search term.

35 NetLibrary: Checkout Printing can be done through the browser, but it will only print what is visible on the screen.

36 NetLibrary: Checkout When you Click on the link to Close Item you will be taken back to the book details page.

38 Audiobooks: Introduction Electronic audiobooks are sound files that can be played on a computer or on certain portable electronic devices.

39 Audiobooks: Introduction Thousands of audiobooks are available for purchase from online vendors such as Amazon or iTunes.

40 Audiobooks: Introduction The Library also has a collection of audiobooks that may be checked out and played on your computer or portable audio device.

41 Audiobooks: Introduction A valid Library card is required to check out an electronic audiobook from the Librarys collection.

43 How to Find Audiobooks One place to begin your search for audiobooks is at the Librarys home page

44 How to Find Audiobooks The Librarys page on Downloadable Audiobooks has information on what you need to get started. There is also a handy link to search the collection

45 How to Find Audiobooks The Digital Media Collection page has news about the collection, as well as important links to search or browse.

46 How to Find Audiobooks Clicking the Search link will take you to an advanced search page where you can take advantage of options to search by format or availability.

47 How to Find Audiobooks Clicking one of the links in the Digital Collection box on the left will give you a list of books by type, such as books in MP3 format.

48 How to Find Audiobooks Another way to find audiobooks is through the Librarys Online Catalog. Try doing a simple word or phrase search for the terms electronic resource.

49 How to Find Audiobooks To see a record, click on its link in the list of results. To view more details about the book, click on the View Book box.

50 How to Find Audiobooks You will be taken to the detailed view of the book in the OverDrive audio collection

51 How to Find Audiobooks If the book you want is available, you can add it to your Digital Cart. If it is not available, you can place a Digital Hold request.

52 How to Find Audiobooks Selecting Add to Digital Cart will place the book aside for you temporarily. You can continue browsing to find more books, or proceed to the checkout area.

53 How to Find Audiobooks Selecting Place Digital Hold or Proceed to Checkout will take you to a screen asking you to log in with your library card number.

55 Audiobook Checkout When you proceed to checkout, all books you have in your digital cart will be listed. You can remove items or confirm them for checkout.

56 Audiobook Checkout If you are checking out an MP3 audiobook, you will have to agree to special terms of use before checking out the book.

57 Audiobook Checkout After confirming the item(s) to be checked out, you may download the book. You may download the book as often as you like until the expiration date.

58 Audiobook Checkout Before you can download the audiobook, however, you must have software installed on your computer to receive the download. OverDrive Media provides free downloads of the required software for Macintosh and Windows computers.

60 OverDrive Console The Overdrive Media Console can be downloaded by clicking on the OverDrive Media Console link.

61 OverDrive Console Be sure to note the computer system requirements, then click on the download link at the top of the page.

62 OverDrive Console Select the appropriate system for your computer (Windows or Macintosh), and click the download button.

63 OverDrive Console Follow the prompts to download and install the OverDrive Media Console

64 OverDrive Console Once the Media Console is installed, you can use it to download audiobooks from the Library.

65 OverDrive Console When the Media Console is used the first time, you may be prompted to upgrade Windows Media Player.

66 OverDrive Console If you have the required version of Windows Media Player, you will be prompted to install a required security upgrade.

67 OverDrive Console Click on Tools in the menu bar, then click on Windows Media Player Security Upgrade to install the required software.

68 OverDrive Console When you download a book, the computer will automatically recognize it as an OverDrive Media Console file.

69 OverDrive Console Overdrive will open a dialog box to determine what to do with the new audiobook.

70 OverDrive Console If it is a new download, the Media Console will create a new folder for it.

71 OverDrive Console Books listed in the Media Console can be played on your computer by clicking the Play button.

72 OverDrive Console The Media Console will open a separate media player for you to listen to the book.

73 OverDrive Console Besides listening to the audiobook on your computer with the OverDrive Media Console, you can transfer audiobooks to a portable media player, such as an iPod or MP3 player. Some books may also be burned to a CD.

74 OverDrive Console Not all audiobooks on Overdrive are available for all devices. Before you download an audiobook, check the symbols to see if it is compatible with the computer and portable audio device you have.

75 OverDrive Console MP3 Audiobooks will play on almost any portable audio device. WMA Audiobooks will play on only a limited number of portable audio device types.

77 If you do not have a portable audio device already, check on the Librarys web site to learn what devices are compatible.

78 Audiobook Devices To transfer an audiobook to a portable device, click on the Transfer button at the top of the OverDrive Console window.

79 Audiobook Devices This will start the Transfer Wizard, which will look for connected portable devices, and begin the transfer when one is selected.

80 Audiobook Devices Follow the prompts to complete the download to the portable device.

81 Audiobook Devices Windows devices will automatically disable access to the audiobook when the checkout time has expired. If you are using an iPod, however, you will be prompted to delete the audiobook when the loan period is over.

82 Audiobook Devices Expired books will be deleted from the Media Console, but if they have been transferred to your iPod, they will stay on the iPod until it is connected to the computer again.

83 Audiobook Devices Some audiobooks can also be burned to CDs.

84 Audiobook Devices Look for the Burn button on the OverDrive Console toolbar.
