Saving for Change: Case Study of Scaling & Innovation March 27, 2009 Saving for Change: Case Study of Scaling & Innovation March 27, 2009
2
Leadership Teams Organization
3
Network Weaver Self-Organization Positive Deviance Rhizomatic Pathways Embedded in a Smart Network
5
Opportunity Group A group that comes together to explore a particular opportunity They ran group Act your way into a new way of thinking/being
6
Noticing & Reflection Developed the process for memorizing Developed pictograph methodology
7
Innovation Pictographic booklet with simple process for memorizing how much people have saved and/or borrowed and how much interest they have accumulated New methodology
9
When we have more money in the fund than demand for loans we purchase sacks of maize and rice and then we sell them during the rainy season when the price is high. If you get sick, the group will go to your fields for you. Before my children would cry at night. Now they sleep better, they have full bellies. Now if you dont have your own money you can get it from the group. This creates a good atmosphere between wives and husbands.
10
Opportunity Group Embedded in a Network These patterns influence the quality of communication and the likelihood of collaboration and innovation Networks are sets of relationships and the patterns they create
11
Core consists of clusters w different perspectives who know & trust each other Periphery draws in new ideas & resources This represents a Field of Potential Characteristics of Smart Networks
12
Action Many people initiate experiments & collaborations Move from small acts to larger Breakthroughs from diversity Successful innovations spread
13
Characteristics of Smart Networks Much capacity building, skill building Trust building activities Facilitation of initial actions Creation of support structures & communication systems
15
Network Weaver Catalytic agent Generates tremendous energy by connecting people well and encouraging them to self-organize
16
Self-organization Anyone can see something that needs to be done, can find the appropriate others and resources to help them do it, and then is willing to share what they learn with others in the network.
17
Project Ecosystem Twosies build relationships Small Projects build skills Large Projects for impact
18
Micro skills & processes Listening Accurate awareness of others Self-awareness & non-attachment Coaching Openness to diverse perspective Appreciation Facilitation
19
Rhizomatic
21
NW: Support Expansion along Natural Pathways Animators reporting that women were started other saving groups on their own -- sharing with their existing networks! Started providing training & coaching to them from the beginning Can increase project impact by 10 times for little cost
22
Number of Villagers Involved in Saving for Change
24
NW: Unnatural Bridging for Learning, Deep Reflection and Innovation Overlapping clusters Animators from different areas meet together regularly to share what they are noticing - stream innovations from one area to another Getting women in villages to bring new ideas to village elders Getting NGOs to work together
25
Communication Systems Resource Flow Mapping & Metrics Micro-skills Innovation Funds
28
How can networks in different countries share & learn? How can NGOs work collaboratively so that a stream of new strategies are introduced and supported?
29
New Leadership Roles Catalytic agents – learning group with others Network Weaver Self-Organizing: Opportunity group – support for change, learning group Specific methodology for action – loan process, postive dev Through enactment of methodology Provide model and support for self-organizing (both individual business, and opportunity group) and reflection Rhizomatic spread System/training for spread or scaling by opp grp participants to other opportunity groups System to transfer this methodology to other action arenas - framework for self-organizing (malaria nets, ponds) New support system Communication Infrastructure Innovations: Innovation Funds, Positive Deviance, etc Training/Coaching: Network Weaving micro processes and skills
