3 What is Music Therapy? The Key Changes Music Therapy Services Definition: Music Therapy is the active experience of music and the relationship developed with a trained therapist that promotes learning, growth, and the achievement of goals. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Definition: Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

4 What is Music Therapy? Well-established allied health profession similar to occupational therapy and physical therapy..

6 What is Music Therapy? Provides a unique variety of music experiences in an intentional and developmentally appropriate manner to effect changes in a childs behavior and facilitate development of his/her communication, social/emotional, sensori-motor, and/or cognitive skills.

8 What is Music Therapy? Involves relationships between a qualified therapist and child; between one child and another; between child and family; and between the music and the participants.

9 Who are Music Therapists? Graduates of over 70 approved music therapy programs in the US. Hold and maintain national board certification from the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Frequently receive continuing education to stay abreast of changes in the field.

10 Music Therapy and Children with Special Needs Goal: To provide children with the tools and skills to lead the best life possible. Skill development areas: Receptive and expressive communication Academic and daily living skills Sensory processing and integration Cognitive skills Social Skills Fine and Gross Motor Emotional expression and awareness

11 Why music? It is fun. Information retention. It provides prompts and reinforcers simultaneously. It is social. Children enjoy music. It is universal. It is positive. It addresses a variety of skills areas in a single intervention.

14 What do music therapists do? Assessment, treatment, documentation. Engage children in singing, listening, moving, playing, and other creative activities to develop skills. Adapt musical experiences to allow children to expand upon their strengths to address areas of need. Provide opportunities for family members to interact musically with the child.

15 What do music therapists do? Work as a part of an interdisciplinary team, coordinating with physical, speech, occupational, and other therapists as well as physicians and teachers. Provide consultation services to parents, teachers, and other therapists on usage of music. Develops a rapport with children.

16 Music Therapy and Families Enjoyable and purposeful activities for families to share with their children. Provide opportunities for play and nurturing. A positive outlet for interaction amongst family members. An opportunity to include the entire family in the therapeutic process.
