Data management Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee/Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) IMIS special collection ‘Stardust’IMIS Development of metadata database on project activities Development of an integrated Stardust database on the actual data
4
Metadata Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee/Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) Discovery metadata’ To list and document all the available databases, ‘Discovery metadata’ allow others to find datasets of interest. On-line information on: General: name, date, version, quality Keywords (ASFA Thesaurus list) Methods: parameters, units, methods, matrix Description: synoptic, extensive Ownership: Data owner, sponsor, datacollector, datamanager Geographic cover: sampling locations, geoterm Temporal cover: time span, frequence Literature, dataset links, project links, framework, Location of dataset, format, medium
5
Meta data Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee/Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) To list and describe all the available databases:
6
Integrated Stardust database Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee/Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) actual data Descriptive metadata’ To store the actual data gathered through sampling and analysis and the metadata about the “when, where, what, how, who, …’s “ of sampling, measurements, treatments, analyses,... ‘Descriptive metadata’ Data available on the web (restricted access). Easy information retrieval: e.g. all data at a certain station, all data of a certain parameter, all data at a certain time, trend of a parameter at a certain locality, … Increased efficiency of data interpretation, policy making, … & no loss of data. Structure depends on sort of data (afternoon meeting)
