There + to be There + to be = an equivalent of the Dutch ‘er zijn’ e.g. There are two boats on this painting. ‘Zich bevinden’ can be expresses by ‘there + to be’ e.g. There are curtains at the window. (NOT: There hang…) Er hangen gordijnen voor de ramen. e.g. There are towels in the cupboard. (NOT: There lie…) Er liggen handdoeken in de kast. e.g. There are mice in the attic. (NOT: There sit…) Er zitten muizen op zolder.

There + to be: exercise There is a fly in my soup. There are many parks in New York. There aren’t any tigers in Africa. There are lots of hotels in big cities. Is there a bank near here? Is there life on Mars? Is there a telephone I can use? There is a football game tomorrow. There are 8 students in my class. There aren’t many people in my town.
