1 Observing Exercise Globular Cluster Observing This view is West horizon if mid-August or can be used for South horizon if late May. (Ignore the meridian as shown in that case). Globular Clusters: Constellation Globular Cluster ------------------ ----------------------- Canes Venetici M3 Coma Berenices M53 Hercules Great Globular M13 Under-appreciated M92 M13 M92 M53 M3

2 1.Locate the Bright StarArcturus (Hint, Follow the Arc to Arcturus). 2. Locate Alpha Canis Venetici 3. M3 is approx 1/3 of the way on that line, just a little off to the right. asod sketch: http://www.asod.info/?p=311 http://www.asod.info/?p=311 Beautiful stellar city! (old city!) ==================== Next stop: Fainter Globular Cluster M53: 2. Follow the line to the next bright star to the West, called Muphrid. 3. Now locate Alpha Coma Berenices, the bottom of the right triangle M53 is above and to the left of Alpha Coma Berenices. Nudge the scope up and eastward to find it. The pair of stars in the wide field help you confirm you have found it. Arcturus Globular Clusters M3 and M53 (Spring Astronomy) sketch asod: http://www.asod.info/?p=1793http://www.asod.info/?p=1793 M53 M3

3 The Great and the Humble Hercules Globular Clusters M13 and m 92 Great Globular Cluster M13 Find the Keystone of Hercules: Look at the top of the keystone and drop down from the top right (west) side about 1/3 the distance. 1 million stars! A glittering ball http://www.asod.info/?p=6594 Compare and contrast … Globular cluster M92 From the top of the keystone, draw an equilateral triangle. M92 is slightly to the left of the apex. Try and focus on the cluster to resolve individual stars Twice the distance of M13 (35,000 ly). M13 M92
