“Applications and potential pitfalls of various test methods”
Drug and DNA Testing For Judicial Environments How does the Method work ? Detection times . The best test for my situation. “Applications and potential pitfalls of various test methods”
4
Understanding the limitations and Advantages
Is the method effective for the drug I am concerned with What is the “Window of Detectability” Are there any “holes” in the detection window Can the method be altered or tampered with Determine what is the drug of choice or is there a specific drug we are looking for . Check the detection windows for the methods before making a decision . Choose the right method for your situation .

Common questions, excuses & mistakes:
“My hair test was positive so I went and got a urine test and it was negative. Your test is obviously wrong!” “I can’t help that I live around drugs. Being exposed to drugs regularly will make my screen positive” “My client was required to have a hair analysis (body hair) but his/her spouse received the normal (head hair) hair test. Are they the same?” “A client is known to abuse prescriptions drugs but how can it be detected? ..” “Just go get a blood test .They are better anyway .”

Drug Test Methods Urine Saliva / Oral Fluids Hair Blood
Fingernail /Toenail Environmental
7
Most Common Asked Question:
Is there a “BEST / SUPERIOR” Method? …… No!
8
Urine Drug Testing Most commonly accepted method
Detects drug use from 2 to 28 days* Detects drugs within hours of use Less expensive / Less evasive We do have built in tampering devices We have testing devices that check for adulteration, (to much Creatine ,specific gravity ,nitrates, oxidants /PCC
9
Saliva / Oral Fluids Tests for drug usage up to 48-60 hours
Detects drug usage within minutes of use Reduces Adulteration / “Shy Bladder” Issues Testing is limited to Marijuana, Cocaine, Opiates, Amphetamines, Synthetics and PCP
10
Blood Drug Testing Very Invasive Adulteration proof Limited Window of
detect ability Amphetamines (except meth): 12 hours Methamphetamine: 24 hours Barbiturates (except phenobarbital): 1 — 2 days Phenobarbital: 4 — 7 days Benzodiazepines: 6 — 48 hours Cannabis: 2 days Cocaine: 24 hours Codeine: 12 hours Cotinine (a break-down product of nicotine): 2- 4 days Morphine: 6 hours Heroin: 6 hours LSD: 0 — 3 hours Methadone: unknown PCP: 24 hours
11
Hair Testing Tests provide drug history up to (90 day avg.)
Reduces Sample Adulteration Can test for up to 14 drug categories Detects both parent drug and metabolite Most labs only go back 90 days because after that you can only determine if the drug has been used but not the specific timeline of when it was used. The hair grows ½ inch every 28 days on average. And is 1mm thick .grows 1 direction out does not get thicker u get what you get .
12
Fingernail Drug Testing
Drugs can be identified in nail clippings 2-4 weeks following ingestion. Drugs can be detected up to 3 months (fingernails) and over 12 months (toenails) Drugs are incorporated into nails from the blood stream and remain locked in the nail until they are cut, bitten or worn off Fingernails not only grow in length but in thickness (average nail is 4mm thick)this creates a drug profile history right under your fingers as we like to say .
13
Fingernail Drug Testing Cont.
1. can a nail test be used to prove that a previously taken hair test was inaccurate ? can some one test positive because of passive or environmental exposure ? how much of the nail or hair is collected ? How do drugs get into the hair and nails ? No ,you do not know what was possible done between test A and test B, 2. Yes but the lab can determine if the drug was ingested or if actually exposure occurred . 3. we need 2 to 3 mm off of all 10 nails ( the size of a quarter). 3. drugs get into the nails through the blood stream so there is no way to alter this one if it has been put in the body it is there like a drug history road map.
14
Synthetic Prescription Drugs
Lortab! – not detectable in a normal opiate drug tests ! Oxycontin! – not detectable in a normal opiate drug tests ! Darvocet ! – not detectable in a normal opiate drug tests ! Vicodin ! – not detectable in a normal opiate drug tests ! Buprenorphine ! – not detectable ! 25 times more potent than heroin The new generation of addicts has discovered that synthetic opiates induce the same intense euphoric high as cocaine and heroin These drug must be tested for specifically they are synthetic normal opiate panels will not detect these. Experts say that there are 1.4 million painkiller addicts in the United States, versus an estimate of 980,000 heroin users

Synthetic Cannabinoids (k-2 Spice) & Bath Salts- A new problem
What are Synthetic Cannabinoids? Synthetic Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that mimic the effect of THC, the principle active ingredient of cannabis. How are Synthetic Cannabinoids being used? Legal in most states, JWH-018 and JWH-073 are the two most popular synthetic cannabinoids used today. Both are commonly associated with herbal smoke and incense products sold under names like K-2, Spice, Serenity, and others. What are Bath Salts? Synthetic stimulants are produced in clandestine labs and sold online or available at smoke shops. Promoted as “bath salts,” “research chemicals,” or “plant food” product labeling attempts to circumvent regulation by suggesting they are not for human consumption.

Other drugs once difficult to detect:
Date Rape Drugs GHB Rohypnol Ketamine Detectable in Blood: (recent only) Detectable in urine: up to 5 days Detectable in hair: days

DNA Screening types of Testing
Relationship Analysis Paternity Maternity Grandparentage Sibling Relationships Adoption Twins: Identical vs. Fraternal Thing’s of use when Testing Sample Experience Buccal swab Blood Hair Saliva Semen Chewing Gum Cigarettes Hats
19
Additional Testing Services
DNA Analysis (AABB Accredited) Probate Infidelity Testing (Instant & DNA Based) Proof of Identification for US DOCUMENTS Avuncular Testing

Summary (some “Cardinal Rules” to remember)
Rarely (if ever) compare results from two different methods. Especially when trying to discount a result vs. another. Always use the method that is capable of detecting targeted drugs (remember the synthetics) “More” is not necessarily “Better” A Blood test is NOT the end-all answer day hair test; is it possible to separate? Nothing on the market that will “MASK” or hide a drug It goes without saying…”there’s more bad information on the internet than good”. Especially when it comes to drugs.
