Raising Ravenous Readers: Fostering Your Childs Love of Reading

What to do… provide frequent opportunities to share a book with your child set aside time everyday – the same time and setting choose books to read together stash books around the house, in the car let your child catch you reading

Choosing the Correct Book Ask your child about what he/she likes to read Ask your child what is the theme of the unit they are reading in school Visit the public library Read the book your child borrows from the school library Visit the Family Resource Room – there are books to borrow there

Enjoying a book with your child Talk about the pictures before you begin to read and make predictions talk about what happened, what might happen Invite your child to link story events with his/her own life Model reading smoothly and with expression to promote fluent reading and create interest My turn, your turn

Repeated Reading Reread favorites – this allows children to internalize story structure and anticipate what will happen next in the book Allows your child to join in as you read Aids in word recognition – it can take up to 30 exposures to a word before it is recognized
