TBFRA 2000 Temperate and Boreal Forest Resource Assessment - 2000 Forest Resources of Europe, CIS, North America, Australia, Japan and New Zealand TBFRA 2000 contains a wide range of forest resource data of 55 countries TBFRA - a contribution to the Global Forest Resource Assessment 2000 carried out under the auspices of two intergovernmental bodies UN/ECE Timber Committee FAO European Forestry Commission work was guided by a Team of Specialist and the Joint FAO/ECE Working Party on Forest Economics and Statistics data were collected from officially designated national correspondents by means of questionnaires before data were supplied by national correspondents data were adjusted to conform international definitions - the same comparable terms and definitions were used for all countries data validation and evaluation by ECE/FAO and a Team of Specialists TBFRA report as well as the TBFRA database include statistical and descriptive information together with analyses undertaken by experts in specific thematic areas NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt

TBFRA 2000 - Dataset Template - In general the TBFRA database with its rows and column headings may be described as follows: Mapped UnitCriteriaTable Type I Table Type II Parameter (Variables) Mapped Unit Name Thematic Area, Chapter, Forms raw data (25 tables) 81 query table by cross-evaluation, defined by TBFRA evaluation (plus query tables defined individual user demands) Data (one cell for each combination of a mapped unit and a parameter) TBFRA database is designed as a ACCESS database (Access 97 and Access 2000) database tables are linked together by the field “country_code” tables can be displayed directly or through forms data can be filtered, aggregated, grouped etc. with the help of queries the query is an active tool, it results in new or differently organized data query results can be displayed directly or through forms, and printed through reports macros and event procedures - help in combining or batching several actions and diminish manual interventions in providing frequently used functions or generating certain outputs NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt

TBFRA 2000 - Dataset Template - Mapped UnitThematic AreaChapterTables/Parameters - 55 countries - 4 TBFRA regions - 5 country groups - MCPFE Lisbon - GFRA Area of Forest and Other Wooded Land I. 81 tables, which contain 588 parameters of which 134 are calculated from raw data set while 454 are taken unchanged from the original enquiry data Ownership II. Management Status Wood Supply III. Carbon Sequestration Biological Diversity IV. Environmental Protection Forest condition and Damage V. Protective and Socio-Economic Functions VI. 5 TBFRA 2000 - Dataset Template - NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt textual comments: numeric data are accompanied with detailed comments, which constitute an integral part of the TBFRA data set comments can be utilized in a query (spreadsheet layout) or in a report comments are organized chapter-wise and in ascending order of table numbers independent table with terms used in the TBFRA 2000 and their definitions information according status of the data - unchanged, modified, check for consistency 56 predefined charts - grouped by subject areas some forest cover maps (picture (.jpg)) special functions and tables: species names in different languages names of national TBFRA correspondents help analyze adjustment data TBFRA database contains further:

TBFRA 2000 - GeoVisualization by the use of the enhanced EFIS prototype - Structure and Format: temporally related statistical data (numeric data plus comments) organised in a Access database (.mdb) plus text documents as the TBFRA Report (.pdf) Corresponding polygon map: no geo-referenced data – only statistical data organized in tables Available maps (forest area): just pictures with no geo-referenced linkage between polygons and associated tabular data NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt Web-Based: no interactive web-based dataset database and report can be downloaded at: http://www.unece.org/trade/timber/fra/welcome.htm

TBFRA 2000 - GeoVisualization and EDA - NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt possible thematic mapping - country level as lowest spatial resolution - pattern investigations only on country units choropleth mapping chart mapping dynamic classification cross-classification classification by dominance non-cartographical data displays multiple display and display linking (like: plots or parallel coordinates) dynamic query propagation of object classes table view and table lens (multi criteria decision making)

TBFRA 2000 - GeoVisualization and EDA - NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt limited or not possible

TBFRA 2000 - GeoVisualization and EDA - NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt if numeric data are accompanied with comments: display of textual comments display of definitions (better understanding of the represented data) in the case of internationally aggregated datasets: display of status of the data (unchanged/modified/adjusted) in the case of internationally aggregated datasets: linkage to corresponding more detailed datasets/ databases, like to NFI data. download function, for downloading corresponding reports or images opportunities for reporting functions (e.g. for pan-European C&I reporting) extended statistical analysis facilities Recommended features, which should be of concern:

TBFRA 2000 - GeoVisualization and EDA - NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt

TBFRA 2000 - GeoVisualization and EDA - NEFIS Kick-off meeting – WP4, Solsona 22-23 March 2004 TU Dresden, Aljoscha Requardt Representing TBFRA data by use of the Visualization Toolkit / enhanced EFIS Prototype: possiblelimited or not possible thematic mapping - country level as lowest spatial resolution - pattern investigations only on country units choropleth mapping chart mapping dynamic classification cross-classification classification by dominance non-cartographical data displays multiple display and display linking (like: plots or parallel coordinates) dynamic query propagation of object classes table view and table lens (multi criteria decision making) thematic mapping and EDA lower than on country level - like national regional analysis visualisation and exploring data over time - time filtering and animation - progress of patterns - use of time slider or time focuser exploring data regarding their spatial distribution analysis of grid (raster) data - grid visualisation - interactive manipulation - data mining, clustering (multi criteria decision making)
