Prosthetic Arm Challenge 2013- 2014 Teams of 2-4 will develop a low cost prosthetic device to complete tasks for a classmate who recently lost part of her arm below the elbow 1 st Place Middle & High School teams compete at Nationals in Portland, Oregon in June!

THE PROSTHETIC ARM – NO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS – PRE-TAX LIMIT OF $40 FOR MATERIALS – TRANS-RADIAL (BELOW ELBOW) – HAVE TERMINAL DEVICE (GRIPPING PART) WITH AT LEAST 2 ARTIFICIAL FINGERS THAT OPEN & CLOSE BY USE OF THE ACTUATOR. – TERMINAL DEVICE MUST EXTEND BEYOND TEAM MEMBER’S HAND

PROSTHETIC ARM CONTINUED… – THE PROSTHETIC INTERFACE (SOCKET CONNECTION BETWEEN TERMINAL DEVICE & BODY) MUST ATTACH BETWEEN ELBOW AND WRIST & EXTEND AT LEAST 3 INCHES FROM TEAM MEMBER’S WRIST ALONG THE FOREARM – ACTUATOR (PART THAT ACTIVATES & CONTROLS TERMINAL DEVICE) CANNOT BE CONTROLLED BY THE TEAM MEMBER’S OWN HAND OR OPPOSITE ELBOW, FOREARM OR HAND – ONLY THE TERMINAL DEVICE CAN BE USED TO GRAB & RELEASE OBJECTS – TEAM MEMBER WILL HAVE WRIST, HAND, & FINGERS IMMOBILIZED FOR TASKS

DISTANCE ACCURACY TASK (GRAB & TOSS) PURPOSE: – GRAB OBJECTS OF VARYING SIZE – LIFT OBJECTS VERTICALLY – CORRECTLY TIME RELEASE OF OBJECT OBJECTIVE: SUCCESSFULLY THROW AS MANY BALLS INTO BUCKETS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE

TEST AREA 75 CM HIGH TABLE SURROUNDED BY 1 METER “WORKING AREA” (ONLY 1 STUDENT PERMITTED IN WORKING AREA DURING TRIAL) FILEBOX LID ON TOP OF TABLE TO HOLD BALLS FOR TOSSING TAPED LAUNCH LINE BUCKETS TAPED & SPACED AT 2 METERS, 3.5 METERS, AND 5 METERS FROM LAUNCH LINE 3 TENNIS BALLS, 3 (2 INCH) VINYL KICKBALLS, 3 PING PONG BALLS

PREPARATION FOR DISTANCE ACCURACY TRIAL 1 MINUTE TO: – PREPARE & DEMONSTRATE ARM – PLACE BALLS ANYWHERE IN BOX ON TABLE – PLACE FILEBOX LID ANYWHERE ON TABLE – STAND OUTSIDE OF WORKING AREA WHEN READY TO BEGIN OR AT END OF 1 MINUTE; IF NOT READY= MISTRIAL

TASK DETAILS JUDGE GIVES START ORDER & STARTS TIMER 1 MINUTE TO GRAB & TOSS BALLS INTO BUCKETS CANNOT TOSS BALLS THAT ARE OUTSIDE OF BOX LID OR ON GROUND TRIAL ENDS WHEN: – TEAM CALLS END WHEN 3 BALLS HAVE BEEN ACCURATELY TOSSED INTO BUCKETS – OR 1 MINUTE HAS PASSED – OR TEAM HAS THROWN ALL AVAILABLE BALLS KEEP BEST SCORE OF 2 TRIALS MISTRIAL: – IF TEAM TOSSES MORE THAN 1 BALL AT A TIME – ANY PART OF PROSTHETIC ARM OR MEMBER’S BODY CROSSES LAUNCH LINE

OBJECT RELOCATION TASK PURPOSE: DEMONSTRATE DEVICE’S ABILITY TO: – GRAB OBJECTS OF VARYING SIZE, SHAPE, CONSISTENCY & WEIGHT – LIFT OBJECTS VERTICALLY & MOVE LATERALLY – PLACE OBJECTS IN CONTAINER

TESTING AREA 6 FOOT TABLE IS DIVIDED INTO 3 ZONES – OPPOSITE ENDS: TASKS AREAS – MIDDLE: “THE VOID” TEAM HAS 1 MINUTE TO PLACE CRATE IN TASK AREA OF CHOICE, READY ARM & DEMONSTRATE FUNCTIONING ARM TO JUDGE 15 OBJECTS (SEE HANDBOOK) WILL BE PLACED RANDOMLY IN OPPOSITE TASK AREA AT END OF 1 MINUTE, COMPETING MEMBER STANDS OUTSIDE WORKING AREA; IF NOT READY =MISTRIAL

TASK DETAILS JUDGE GIVES START ORDER & STARTS TIMER 1 MINUTE TO CARRY OBJECTS OVER THE “VOID” & PLACE IN CRATE (NO TOSSING OBJECTS) IF OBJECT FALLS ON FLOOR IT MUST BE PICKED UP BY THE PROSTHETIC & PLACED IN THE TASK AREA OBJECT MAY BE SLID TO EDGE OF TABLE TO BE LIFTED BUT NOT SLID INTO THE “VOID” JUDGE WILL STOP TIMER WHEN ALL OBJECTS ARE IN CRATE OR AFTER 1 MINUTE BROKEN OBJECTS OR OBJECTS STILL HELD BY DEVICE AT END OF TIME WILL NOT COUNT KEEP BEST SCORE OF 2 TRIALS SEE HANDBOOK FOR SCORING DETAILS

TASK DETAILS CONTINUED JUDGE STARTS TRIAL & TIMER 2 MINUTES TO SECURE ALL 3 HEX NUTS & BOLTS TO BOARD DEVICE MUST REMAIN IN TESTING AREA & FLAT BOTTOM BOARD IN CONTACT WITH TABLE (BOARD CAN BE ROTATED) GRAB 1 HEX BOLT BY THE TERMINAL DEVICE & INSERT INTO PRE-DRILLED HOLE GRAB HEX NUT WITH TERMINAL DEVICE & SECURE ONTO BOLT *note this year’s competition does not include use of wrenches (photo is from 2012-13)

TASK DETAILS CONTINUED… HEX NUT MUST COMPLETELY PASS A MARKING ON BOLT TO BE SCORED IN THE HIGHER ZONE SELECT ANY ORDER TO COMPLETE TASK CAN HOLD THE BOLT WITH UNENCUMBERED HAND ONLY BY THE HEAD OF BOLT; NO TWISTING OF BOLT WITH THIS HAND ALLOWED!! IF BOLT OR NUT IS DROPPED IT MUST BE PLACED ON THE TABLE OUTSIDE OF THE TESTING AREA

TRIAL ENDS TEAM MAY CALL TIME AFTER ALL 3 NUTS & BOLTS ARE SECURED OR 2 MINUTES HAVE PASSED KEEP BEST SCORE OF 2 TRIALS NOTE: DROPPED ITEMS THAT ARE NOT RETURNED TO TABLE RESULT IN FULL TIME SCORE GIVEN IF MEMBER AIDS IN SECURING THE BOLT WITH UNENCUMBERED HAND= MISTRIAL See handbook for full scoring details

Technical Paper OBJECTIVE: To offer a close examination of your team’s engineering design process, as it related to all major design choices and STEM concepts. * Must be written by students; outside help must be acknowledged in paper REQUIRED ELEMENTS: – Title Page – Table of Contents – Introduction – Discussion – Conclusions – Recommendations – Bibliography – Acknowledgements – Appendix FORMATTING Typed,12 pt Times New Roman 1 inch margins Double spaced 5-15 pages PDF preferred/MS Word Accepted

ACADEMIC POSTER PRESENTATION OBJECTIVE: To overview the functionality of the team’s final device. Teams will present their device & relevant aspects of the design process from their technical paper.
