Laws of the Game Questions & Discussion November 7, 2012

Discussion question – On a throw-in when is the ball in play? What are the factors that determine if a throw-in never entered the field and so should be retaken by the same team?

The assigned AR fails to show up for a match so the referee appoints a club linesman from the visiting team. He instructs the club linesman that she is only to signal when the ball passes entirely over the touch line or the goal line with a raised flag and is not to signal direction, offside or fouls. Correct or incorrect?

Correct.

A player who has been given permission to leave the field temporarily to deal with blood on his shirt, enters the field without permission and punches an attacking player in the defending teams penalty area. What is the call and what is the restart? Would the call and restart differ if a substitute was the perpetrator?

A player who has been given permission to leave the field temporarily to deal with blood on his shirt, enters the field without permission and punches an attacking player in the defending teams penalty area. What is the call and what is the restart? Would the call and restart differ if a substitute was the perpetrator Player - Red card for violent conduct; penalty kick. Substitute - Red card for violent conduct; IFK where the ball was when the sub entered the field

A substitute enters the field during play and kicks the ball. The referee cautions the substitute for entering the field without permission and restarts the match with a drop ball. Correct or incorrect?

Incorrect X 2! Substitutes can only be cautioned for unsporting behavior, dissent or delay. Correct call is caution for unsporting behavior and restart with an IFK for the opponents.

Are there any restarts where the direction of play is restricted? If so what are the restarts if done improperly?

Throw-in must be thrown into the field of play; improperly done – rethrow. Kick off must be kicked forward; improperly done – rekick. Penalty kick must be kicked forward: improperly done – IFK for opponents at the penalty spot. Goal kicks and free kicks by a team inside their own penalty area must exit the penalty area before crossing the goal line; improperly done – rekick.

A corner kick hits a tree branch above the goal within the area of the field. It drops to the center of the goal area where an attacker shoots and scores. The referee signals for a drop ball at the center of the goal area. Correct or incorrect?

A corner kick hits a tree branch above the goal within the area of the field. It drops to the center of the goal area where an attacker shoots and scores. The referee signals for a drop ball at the center of the goal area. Correct or incorrect? Incorrect. The tree branch is considered a preexisting condition and therefore part of the field. The correct call is goal; restart is a kickoff.

After a foul by the attacking team inside the penalty area the defender taking the free kick decides to play it backwards to the keeper. The keeper, who did not expect to be playing the ball, tries to clear the ball but it deflects off his foot and into the goal. The referee signals for a corner kick for the attacking team. Correct or incorrect?

After a foul by the attacking team inside the penalty area the defender taking the free kick decides to play it backwards to the keeper. The keeper, who did not expect to be playing the ball, tries to clear the ball but it deflects off his foot and into the goal. The referee signals for a corner kick for the attacking team. Correct or incorrect? Incorrect. The ball was never in play since it was touched by a second player before leaving the penalty area. The correct call is to retake the free kick.
