Helps to prevent and manage over 20 chronic conditions (including CHD, Cancer, Diabetes, Stroke and Mental Health conditions) Fourth leading risk factor for global mortality Clear causal relationship between the amount people do and all-cause mortality Key reminders on the benefits of physical activity

Risk or cost of inactivity Consequences for health, cost burden on health services, estimated cost to the NHS of £1.06 billion (conservative estimate excluding falls, osteoporosis and others) Wider economic cost such as sickness absence £1.06 billion

Levels of inactivity in Staffordshire Around 51% of adults (16+) are inactive (Active Peoples Survey 4) This equates to 348,900 people in Staffordshire being inactive Based on national estimates (from HSE 2008) where 24% and 29% of boys and girls respectively had low levels of activity, it is estimated that in Staffordshire 34,300 children would be inactive.

Programmes aimed at reducing sedentary behaviour (leisure time screen use) Movement activity for early years (intervention with nursery staff) Stimulating play in young people (low cost play schemes open to all) Active living for older adults (such as walking and other appropriate activities) Mix and Match combining vigorous and moderate activity (allowing choice) Muscle strength opportunities alongside cardiovascular exercise Provision of opportunity for young people, adults and older adults New opportunities for action
