Identifying molecules – picking defining characteristics In this lab activity you will be classifying all the structures on the structure sheet into their appropriate categories. THEN you will use the vocabulary list below to describe each structure. Use ALL the words that apply to each structure. This will help you get used to how the words can be used. Remember there is a lot of vocab! RECOMMENDATION: Organize everything BEFORE gluing. Once you glue, you will not be able to rearrange your structures. Make sure you are SURE where everything goes BEFORE attaching them to the page. Vocabulary words: MacromoleculeOrganicInorganic MonomerPolymerCarbohydrate MonosaccharideDisaccharidePolysaccharide LipidGlycerolFatty Acid TriglycerideUnsaturatedSaturated TransProteinAmino Group (end) Carboxyl Group (end)Variable R GroupPolypeptide NucleotideNucleic AcidBase PhosphateSugar

Identifying molecules – picking defining characteristics Cut out all the molecules that relate to lipids and attach them below. - Label each using appropriate molecule names and/or vocabulary Label each using appropriate molecule names and ANY appropriate vocabulary What characteristics do all have in common? How will you distinguish these molecules from the other classes of compounds?
