ART IS COMMUNICATION Art is a language that artists use to express ideas and feelings that everyday words cannot Art is an experience, it is something that you not only see, but feel, hear, taste and even smell

THE PURPOSES OF ART In pairs, you will finish a short reading and write down the 5 purposes of Art. Be prepared to share out at the end of class Personal Functions – People create art to express personal feelings Social Function – People do art to share family, community or civilization. Spiritual Function – People do art to express personal beliefs. Physical Functions – People do art to design things such as cars, toys, tools, buildings, metal, houses or any other physical things Educational Functions – People do art to give information to the world without having to use words.

INSPIRATION Inspiration – Where artists get their ideas The process of art begins with a question – “What should I create?” In the past, Artists have looked for inspiration in the following places: (refer to reading) Nature People and World Events Myths and Legends Spiritual beliefs Creative techniques Artists from the past Ideas commissioned by Employers
