In archery, unlike rifle shooting, you
keep both eyes open.
Using your dominant eye and keeping both eyes open improves your binocular
and peripheral vision.

3. Making a String Bow
The string bow ™ is used to teach and practice archery technique and can prevent or cure shooting problems
Straddle a shooting line
With a 90 in string, fold the string in half creating a loop at the mid point
Hook the “archers groove” in the string loop
Make a bow hand fist around the string

4. Making a String Bow (cont)
Hang bow arm down along the side towards the target.
Hinge the bow arm up to eye level. The drawing arm elbow should be slightly higher than the bow arm and parallel to the ground.
Draw and anchor the index finger at the corner of the mouth
Pinch the string where it enters the bow hand.
Tie a knot at the pinched point.
Tie a 2nd knot a “hands” width from the 1st.

8. Stance Straddle the shooting line Feet shoulder width apart
Right handers with left foot forward. Left handers with right foot forward.
Rear foot should remain in place once set.
Feet shoulder width apart
The tips of your feet should form a straight line to the target
Turn the foot or “open” the foot that is forward of the shooting line toward the target

9. Draw Hand Set
With bow at arms length and pointed down, grasp the string with all three fingers immediately below the nock indicator
Nock at least to the first joint of the first and third finger
Keep the hand flat and thumb down.

10. Bow Hand Set
Place your hand in the bow grip to the lifeline of your palm.
The lifeline should aligned over the center of the bow’s grip.
Knuckles should be at a 30 deg angle.

11. Pre-Draw
Bring your bow up to shoulder level without pulling the bow string back.
Draw hand will remain hooked on the string.
Drawing arm will be slightly higher than the bow arm.
Draw hand, arm and elbow will be parallel to the ground

12. Draw Pull (draw) the string toward your shoulder.
Rotate your hips and shoulders around until your elbow is slightly in front of the arrow line.
You should feel your upper back muscles activate.

13. Anchor
Anchor by touching your index finger to the corner of your mouth.

14. Aiming
Your dominant eye is your rear sight and must be in a consistent location as it relates to the anchor.
Your front site is the arrows point.
Allow your bow to move naturally.

15. Shot Set-up
After you have reached your anchor and begun your sight alignment, create movement from your drawing shoulder and/or arm and elbow to the rear.
Initiate your release at any time.

16. Release
The release is a combination of relaxing your fingers and the back of your hand in a single instant.
if done correctly your drawing hand should either 1) remain at your anchor or 2) move backwards toward your back shoulder

17. Follow-through and Reflection
Upon release your drawing hand will move reward with your fingers relaxed and end with your thumb touching your shoulder.
After you release and conduct your follow through, reflect upon your drawing and bow hand to see that they are in the right positions.

18. Safety Orientation Follow all whistle commands 2 blows “GET BOW”
1 blow “SHOOT”
3 blows “ GO GET ARROWS”
5 or more blows “EMERGENCY” stop what you are doing, return bow to rack and move in back of the waiting line quietly.

19. Safety Orientation
When not shooting, all archers will remain behind the WAITING LINE with their bows racked.
Obey all commands from the instructor
Everyone is a safety officer.
Anyone can call a cease fire
If you drop a arrow at the shooting line, raise your hand to get the instructor's attention and he will bring a new arrow. DO NOT pick the arrow up

20. Safety Orientation
If more than 2 archers are on a target when retrieving arrows, one archer moves forward to retrieve arrows while all other remains behind the TARGET LINE.
Bow should only be shot with arrow. No dry fire.
Only walking is permitted on or near archery range (no running).

Inspect bow before each archery event.
Inspect bow strings and cables for broken or frayed strings
Bowstrings and cables will be in wheel and cam tracks
Nock locators are present and tight
Blow limbs and risers are free from cracks
Arrow rest is not missing or broken
Each limb is adjusted equally.

24. Safety Review Take all commands from the instructor.

1 blast means “shoot”
2 blasts means “get bow”
3 blasts means “go get arrows”
4 blasts means “emergency”
If you drop an arrow raise your hand but do not pick the fallen arrow up.

25. Safety Review
Archers not getting their arrows stay behind the target line.
Archers getting their arrows will look back to ensure everyone remains behind the target line.
Walking with arrows requires one hand over the arrow points and one around the shafts with the points pointed down.
Only draw a bow if you have an arrow nocked and it remains pointed down towards the targets.

26. Safety Review
When removing the arrow from the target place one hand around the arrow at the point of penetration, look back to the target line, remove the arrow and set it on the ground.
Walking no running while on the archery range.
After shooting your last arrow, place your bow on the rack and step behind the waiting line.

27. Safety Review
Archers not getting their arrows stay behind the target line.
Archers getting their arrows will look back to ensure everyone remains behind the target line.
