Better Accessible Transport To Encourage Robust Intermodal Enterprise Terry Waugh Action Renewables

Agenda What is BATTERIE about? Aims Outputs Partners Work Packages Benefits

BATTERIE – What is it? The project is about transport It is about connectivity in transport and reducing co2 emissions The Batterie project is designed to help local and regional government, to help the community make the shift from carbon intensive fuel to greener more sustainable forms of fuel It addresses Atlantic Area priority 3.1; Improve accessibility and internal links Promote interoperability and continuity of existing transport networks, and sea/road/rail/air intermodality

How is it funded? Atlantic Area is a transnational cooperation programme in the framework of the "European Territorial Cooperation" objective financed by the European Commission through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) The Atlantic Area covers Ireland and the Atlantic regions of Spain, France, Portugal and the United Kingdom BATTERIE has a budget of 3.4m It started on 1 st Jan 2012; completes on 31 st Dec 2014

Context A huge rise in interest in alternative fuels and smart technology – EU 202020 vision, EU Targets, National and Regional CO2 reduction targets, the rising cost of oil and petrol The industry shows interest and are investing hundreds of millions in this area. Lack of good journey planners – Alternative fuels – Cross border – Multimodal

Aims The overall aim is to establish better accessible and sustainable transport which will in turn encourage and secure more effective and smooth operation of existing transport infrastructure in the Atlantic Area. We will explore appropriate means to improve the efficiency of multi-modal logistic chains. This will include; – Effective interconnection between all intermodal networks – How to introduce smart technologies – Identifying the alternative fuel sources available By examining how effectively all the current intermodal networks operate, and by examining the impact of smart technology and alternative fuels an objective is to establish and share best practice in making the alternative models available and commercial sustainability.

Outputs Contribute to providing an easier transition between modes of transport, and improved connectivity between road, rail, air and sea Deliver a web-based journey-planning tool to facilitate intermodal journeys across the Atlantic Area maximising the use of smart technology and alternative fuels For smart technology and alternative fuels we will map and model availability and future development, costs and environmental impact (reducing CO2 emissions) Design scenarios and models of changes to policy, behaviour and transnational strategies Pilot Journey Deliver a pilot network conference

Who are the Partners?

1.Action Renewables (UK) 2.South West College (UK) 3.Pure Energy Centre (UK) 4.European Automotive Strategy Network (UK) 5.Udaras Reigiunach An Lar Dheiscirt (South West Regional Authority) (IE) 6.Inteli - Inteligencia em Inovacao - Centro de Inovacao (PT) 7.Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste (PT) 8.Esigelec (FR) 9.Centro Nacional de Energias Renovables – CENER (SP) 10.Denokinn - Centro Vasco de Innovacion, Emprendizaje y Desarrollo de Nuevos Negocios (SP) 11.Fundacion Asturiana de La Energia (FAEN) (SP) 12.ESB (IE) 13.Oxford Brookes University (UK)

BATTERIE Work Package 3 - Smart Technologies and Alternative Fuels –Examine how effectively all the intermodal networks interoperate –Identify what smart technologies are available, which could have an impact –Identify the alternative fuel sources available and establish the various stages of development –Identify the status of existing infrastructure development and the availability of the fuel –Establish best practice for wider introduction –For smart technology and alternative fuels map and model availability and future development, costs and environmental impact (reducing CO2 emissions) –Establish and share best practice in making the alternative models available and commercial sustainability.

BATTERIE Work Package 4 – Intermodality –Establish the potential impact on road, rail, sea and air intermodality, of what will happen if things continue as they are –Examine the future potential impact of the introduction of smart technologies, including alternative fuels (link with WP 3 & 5) –Establish and document the relationship between alternative fuel type and rural / urban divide, behaviour (eg. distance of journeys), legislative frameworks and economic environment in each partner region and current progress towards standardisation in the Atlantic Area. (link with WP3 & 5)

BATTERIE Work Package 5 - Policy & Behaviour –Identify and design scenarios and models of changes to policy, behaviour and transnational strategies (results from WP3 & 4) –Identify and design possible strategies and changes to legislation, taxation, fuel duties and other legislative tools and disseminate their impact (results from WP3 & 4) –Develop scenarios and model potential changes to driving techniques and behaviours (results from WP3 & 4) –Develop regional guidance documents for regional authorities (results fromWP3 & 4)

BATTERIE Work Package 6 - Pilot Networks –Establish a journey through all of the regions, to test smart technologies and alternative fuels and more importantly to test how these provide an easy transition between modes of transport. (link with all work packages) –Demonstrate best practice in making the smart technologies and various fuel sources available. Deliver a pilot network conference (link with all work packages) –Deliver a web-based journey-planning tool to facilitate intermodal journeys across the Atlantic Area maximising the use of smart technology and alternative fuels (link with all work packages)

BATTERIE Work Package 7 – Communications –Communicate the outcome of BATTERIE to consumers, policy makers, local and regional authorities and the EU (link with all work packages) –Ensure the sustainability of BATTERIE into the future –Establish how the outcomes can be used to educate and how they can be communicated to consumers in an Atlantic Area guidance document –Deliver policy advisory workshops in each partner region

Benefits Funding Employment Better understanding of transport issues in remote areas Project outputs Experience Partnerships Project after-life
