2 I am Mr. Ellis, an eighth grade student at SJB. My purpose is to inform you about cigarettes; What they are How they are used Why people use them Their harmful effects And how people can stop smoking. A cigarette is a small roll of tobacco wrapped in a thin paper for smoking. Tobacco is a plant with leaves that are used to make a cigarette. Cigarettes have many chemicals that harm people. Some of the harmful chemicals found in cigarettes include: Benzene – a fuel additive Formaldehyde - a chemical used to preserve the dead. Ammonia - a toilet cleaner Nicotine – an insecticide and a very addictive chemical. Tar - Particulate matter drawn into lungs when you inhale on a lighted cigarette

3 Reasons for Smoking Some people smoke because they are addicted. Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs that exists and it is found in cigarettes. Some children smoke because they want to seem older and become part of a group. Some teenage girls smoke to loose weight, especially actresses and singers. Smoking can make people very sick. It kills about 500,00 people each year. Smoking one cigarette takes about seven minutes off a smokers life. 3,000 Americans per year die from lung cancer related to second hand smoke. Smoking also contributes to stroke and heart atacks. Affects of Smoking

4 Ways to Stop Smoking Quit and Stay Healthy It is very difficult to stop smoking but there are ways. Join a self help group such as Freedom from Smoking Online and Lung Helpline. Medicines that can help you quit. –Nicotine gum –Nicotine inhaler –Nicotine lozenge –Nicotine nasal spray –Nicotine patch Smoking cigarettes is just plain stupid. It is extremely addictive, causes lung problems, causes many forms of cancer, and harms non smokers. If you dont smoke, dont start and if you do, quit. Do It for yourself and others around you.
