1 Common Unit of Measurement
3/25/2017 Common Unit of Measurement Big Idea: What are the units of measurement commonly used in science? Questions Notes What is MASS? Definition: The amount of matter (stuff) in an object NOT WEIGHT Tool used to measure: Triple Beam Balance 8-R

2 Mass Weight 3/25/2017 8-L The SI unit of Mass is Kilogram
The SI unit of Weight is Newton Mass is the amount of matter present in a body and is an intrinsic property of the body. Mass of an object remains the same always at any place. Weight is a measure of how strongly gravity pulls on that matter. Mass is measured using a pan balance, a triple-beam balance, lever balance or electronic balance. Weight is measured using a spring balance 8-L

3 Units and Interesting Facts: 1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs
3/25/2017 Questions Notes Units and Interesting Facts: 1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs 1 kilogram = 1000 grams (a small cantaloupe) 1 gram (a paper clip) 1000 milligram = 1 gram 1 mg (a grain of sand) 8-R (cont.)

5 Questions Notes What is LEGNTH? 3/25/2017 Definition:
The distance between 2 points Tool/s used to measure: Ruler Meter Stick Units and Interesting Facts: 1 mile = 1.6 km 1 kilometer = 1000 meters 1 meter (about 3 ft) 100 centimeter = 1 meter 1cm (about width of pinky) 1000 millimeter = 1 meter 1mm (about thickness of thumb nail) What is LEGNTH? 8-R (cont.)

6 2000 mm = ____ m 5.6 km = _____ m 5 m = ____ mm 50 cm = _____ m
3/25/2017 Try these conversions, using the ladder method. 2000 mm = ____ m 5.6 km = _____ m 5 m = ____ mm 50 cm = _____ m 16 cm =___ mm 6.3 cm = ____ mm 104 km = ____ m 8 mm = _____ cm 198 m = _____ km 5.6 m = _____ cm 2500 m = ____km 120 mm = ____ m 480 cm = _____ m 75 mm = _____ m 65 m = _____ mm 8-L

7 The amount of space an object takes up Tool/s used to measure:
3/25/2017 Questions Notes Definition: The amount of space an object takes up Tool/s used to measure: Ruler (l x w x h) Graduated cylinder Units and Interesting Facts: 1 liter (liter bottle of soda) 1000 milliliter = 1 liter (1mL = 2 drops) What is VOLUME? 8-R (cont.)

8 3/25/2017 The curve of the top surface of water in a graduated cylinder is called _________. MENISCUS 8-L (cont.)

9 The amount of movement of molecules (how hot) Tool/s used to measure:
3/25/2017 Questions Notes What is TEMPERATURE? Definition: The amount of movement of molecules (how hot) Tool/s used to measure: Thermometer Units and Interesting Facts: 100° C = water boils 37° C (98.6° F) = ave. body temp 0°C (22°F) = water freezes 8-R (cont.)

10 3/25/2017 8-L

11 Tool/s used to measure: Stop watch Units and Interesting Facts:
3/25/2017 Questions Notes What is TIME? Definition: The continuum of experience in which events pass from past, present and to the future Tool/s used to measure: Stop watch Units and Interesting Facts: Seconds you know this already 8-R (cont.)

12 Kilogram _____ Milliliter _____ Kilometer _____ Meter _____
3/25/2017 Write the correct abbreviation for each metric unit. Kilogram _____ Milliliter _____ Kilometer _____ Meter _____ Millimeter _____ Centimeter _____ Gram _____ Liter _____ Milligram _____ 8-L

13 Questions Notes 3/25/2017 What is DENSITY? Definition:
The measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume. Units and Interesting Facts: kg/m3 g/cm3 g/mL Density of water = 1 g/cm3 = 1 g/mL 7-R

14 Summary: 3/25/2017 *Make sure you address all three essential questions: What are the units of measurement commonly used in science? How important is to have a standard of measurement? How are values transposed from one unit to the other? 8-L
