El Niño, La Niña The Child and The Brat Jacob Hunt Science Mr. Shepard

What are El Niño and La Niña? El Niño and La Niña are large storms that occur off of the Pacific Coast. - El Niño is defined as a warmer than normal storm. -La Niña is described as a cooler than normal storm.

What causes them? The storms are caused by either the ocean being warmer then the air, or vice versa. FYI: This is La Niña

How long do they hang around? The two storms each last for about a year.

When does it happen? The storms are simply two phases in which there is an irregular fluctuation between warmer than usual and colder than usual ocean temperatures in the region. The storms oscillate abut every two years. -El Niño is the warm, dry storm, La Niña is the cool, wet storm.

Danger! El Niño and La Niña can cause flooding, tornadoes, and overall destruction. -There are research buoys for studying the storms that cost about $50,000 each, and can be destroyed by the storms. -The last El Niño caused 23,000 deaths and 32 billion dollars in damage.

Interesting Facts Fernando Torres, Spanish soccer player, is nicknamed El Niño. This is a very strange quote about El Niño: "It is a shame that almost everyone blames bad events such as floods, droughts, fish kills and heat waves on El Niño. El Niño is a good dude!" - James O'Brien, Center for Ocean Atmosphere, Prediction Studies, Florida State University
