Its only an ear infection, they said. Mom consulted doctor after doctor. After a long exhaustive process, Dalton was diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome. It occurs in approximately 1 in 3,600 boys and 1 in 5,000 girls. Script Although there had been no known family history, my aunt had a baby with Fragile X the year after Daltons birth. Script I have learned that I also may be a carrier of the Fragile X chromosome. This has caused me to reconsider having children, and my own future. Physically, he has an enlarged head and ears; he cant form sentences but repeats words and sounds over and over again. He is hyperactive, bites his own hands and fingers when nervous or upset, and his feelings are easily hurt. Script He is also loving, funny, adventurous, curious, independent, and one of the most courageous people Ive ever known. Script Dalton needs attention around the clock. He wants to be independent but there are many things he cant do for himself. His needs come first, and its hard for other family members not to feel left out. School is very frustrating for Dalton. With the help of doctors and therapists, my family slowly began to find a new normal but even now I wonder Why was my brother the one to be like this? Script The doctors expect that Dalton will always need the help of an aide, but we hope one day he will be able to live on his own. Teaching him the skills he will need is a big job, and there arent a lot of resources for special needs people in our area so Mom took child advocate classes, and she became inspired to help other families. Script With the support of the Stockton Optimists Club, in 2008 she and my aunt formed Challengers United, which started with 6 families of disabled children and adults; two years later 13 families are involved. Everyone can take part, and families have time to talk and provide support to each other. Script People with a wide variety of disabilities come to our events -- members have Fragile X Syndrome, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD, Bipolar Disorder and Aspergers Syndrome. Script Some kids, like Dalton, are physically very strong, but have difficulty communicating. Some are confined to a wheelchair; others are aggressive, hyperactive and easily frustrated. We distribute brochures, write newspaper articles, and speak to clubs like Optimists, the Agape House, the VFW, and my FCCLA chapter. Script Living with a special needs brother is difficult, frustrating and challenging, but it has also been a great experience. Helen Keller said, We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joys in the world. Script Because of Dalton, Ive learned something new every day about sharing time, energy, and responsibility. Many loving, caring and helping hands are needed to ease the load. The old saying, it takes a village to raise a child was never truer than when speaking of a child with disabilities. Special needs children are part of the future too, and deserve to become productive, functioning citizens. Script While my family still has questions about what tomorrow holds for Dalton, we hope the community will change its attitudes towards people with special needs.
