Events that cannot happen together (e.g. cant a card that is both red and black in a card deck) P(A B) = P(A) + P(B)
3
A pack of 52 cards, P(A) = probability that the card is a diamond P(B) = probability that the card is a black card P(C) = probability that the card is a king, queen, or jack P(A) = 13/52 P(B) = 26/52 P(C) = 12/52 1.Are A and B mutually exclusive? 2.Are A and C mutually exclusive?
4
1. Since diamonds are red, P(A B) = 0, so A and B are mutually exclusive. 2. Since there are 3 cards that are diamonds, P(A C) = 3/52… not zero, so A and C are not mutually exclusive.
