Identifying Attributes of Quadrilaterals
2
Examples of 4-sided shapes These shapes are called QUADRILATERALS
3
Quadrilateral Quadrilateral just means "four sides" QUAD means four LATERAL means side Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral but only if each of the four sides are straight. This line is considered to be a straight line, even though it’s diagonal.
4
These look like 4-sided figures but not all four of the sides are straight!! Non-Example of Quadrilaterals Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral but only if each of the four sides are straight. This line is considered to be a straight line, even though it’s diagonal. If all the lines on this shape were diagonal, this would be a quadrilateral.
5
Why is it important to know the properties of quadrilaterals? Understanding the properties of quadrilaterals will help you to understand the properties of three-dimensional shapes like cubes and rectangular prisms.
6
Concept Development Definition A quadrilateral is a four-sided shape with FOUR STRAIGHT SIDES. Note: Special quadrilaterals have special names.
7
Special Quadrilaterals have special names trapezoid square rectangle parallelogram rhombus Let’s learn about what makes these quadrilaterals special…
8
Parallelogram A four-sided shape with exactly two pair of parallel sides. Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral but only if each of the four sides are straight.
9
Concept Development Definition A quadrilateral is a four-sided shape with FOUR STRAIGHT SIDES. Note: Special quadrilaterals have special names.
10
Trapezoid A four-sided shape with exactly one pair of parallel sides. The two sides that are parallel are called the bases of the trapezoid. Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral but only if each of the four sides are straight. base
11
Rectangle A four-sided shape having exactly two pair of parallel sides. All angles on a rectangle are right angles. Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral but only if each of the four sides are straight.
12
Square A four-sided shape having exactly two pair of parallel sides. All angles on a square are right angles. A square has four equal-length sides. Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral but only if each of the four sides are straight. 1 2 3 4
13
Rhombus A four-sided shape having four sides of equal length and exactly two pair of parallel sides. Any four-sided shape is a Quadrilateral but only if each of the four sides are straight. 1 2 3 4

Guided Practice #1 A quadrilateral is a Whiteboard: What shape is this girl leaning on? Let me show you how I would decide what shape this is… four-sided shape with FOUR STRAIGHT sides.
15
Guided Practice #2 A quadrilateral is a Whiteboard: What shape is this boy pushing? Pair Share: Talk with your partner and decide: Is this a quadrilateral? How many pairs of parallel lines are there? How many right angles are there? Are all the sides equal? Use these answers to identify this shape. This shape is a rectangle. Why? It has EXACTLY two pair of parallel sides. It has four right angles. four-sided shape with FOUR STRAIGHT sides.
16
Guided Practice #3 A quadrilateral is a Whiteboard: On what shape is the girl standing? Pair Share: What 3 special properties does this special shape have? A square has four equal sides has EXACTLY two pair of parallel sides and four right angles. 1 2 3 4 four-sided shape with FOUR STRAIGHT sides.
17
Guided Practice #4 A quadrilateral is a Whiteboard: On what shape is the girl putting her foot? Pair Share: What 2 special properties does this special shape have? A rhombus has four equal sides and EXACTLY two pair of parallel sides. 1 2 3 4 four-sided shape with FOUR STRAIGHT sides.
18
Guided Practice #5 Which of these shapes is a Parallelogram? A four-sided shape with exactly two pair of parallel sides. Rhombus Rectangle Square Why not? Why? Pair Share
19
Guided Practice #6 Which of these shapes is a Rectangle? A four-sided shape having all right angles. It has exactly two pair of parallel sides. Why not? Rectangle Square Why not? Rectangle Why? Pair Share
