1 Human Security: Vinton A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO RECOGNIZE THE THREATS AND NEEDS ON HUMAN SECURITY AND IDENTIFY THE STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE PEOPLE’S CAPACITY TO LIVE FREE FROM FEAR, FREE FROM WANT, AND TO LIVE IN DIGNITY May 2013

2 Examples of factors that ensure the security of people : Economic security : income, employment, household quality Food security : quality, access to healthy food Health security: coverage, quality of care Environmental Security: conservation and healthy living, working, learning, and play environments Personal security: family healthy relationships Community security: neighborhood conviviality, reduced crime and threats Political security: inclusive and equal protective regulations and enforcement

3 How to measure the economic factors? The economic security can be measured through the following:  Household income  Percentage of children living in or below the poverty level  Housing affordability  Percentage of households with:  Drinking water quality  Improved sanitation system  Internet access

4 How to measure food security? Food security could be measured through the following:  Percentage of children that are:  Undernourished  Malnourished  Overweight  Number of stores/vendors of fresh food in less than a mile-walking distance  Amount of household income dedicated to food/meals in an average family  Number of community or household gardens

5 Some population groups are more vulnerable because they face reduced levels of security in one or more dimensions of the human security model. The Human Security Project of the Village of Vinton will identify the population groups and the threats and needs of these groups and determine the strategies necessary to overcome those threats and needs.

6 Identifying needs, capacities and strateg ies The identification of needs, capacities, and the definition of strategies will be conducted with ample public participation through:  An Advisory Team formed by  Main sectors (health, commerce, security, education, industry, spiritual, etc.)  Both genders  Main age-population groups (young adults, elderly)  Focus Groups and neighborhood meetings  Databases and reports  Community-planning meetings  Experts’ meetings  EPA Smart Growth committees  Health, security, education, spiritual representatives  Private sector: commerce, industry

7 Plan Activities 2013 Collect information, identify participants, design the plan June 30 Organize meetings, focus groups, and interviews to obtain information July 31 Analyze data & report back to the community to identify strategies and actions Aug-Sept Present report to the Village of Vinton and the community Oct 31
