Industrial Statistics: Current Practice As per International Recommendation of Industrial Statistics -2008, the Industrial Statistics are active primarily in the following areas: (i) Mining and quarrying; (ii) Manufacturing; (iii) Electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply; (iv) Water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities

Industrial Statistics: Current Practice (contd.) In the context of Bangladesh information on mining and quarrying, electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply; water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities are collected from secondary sources, mainly from government departments.

Industrial Statistics: Current Practice For the manufacturing sector the sources of data are as follows: Economic census; Survey of Manufacturing Industries (SMI); Other ad-hoc surveys in the manufacturing sectors.

Industrial Statistics: Current Practice (contd.) Economic Census: The first Economic Census of the country was held in December,1986 which covered selected information on industries, particularly on manufacturing industries. The items that were covered were number of establishments, total person engaged, working proprietors, unpaid family workers, full-time workers and part time workers. The second economic census of the country was held in 2001& 2003. The census in urban areas were held in 2001 while census in rural areas were held 2003. Similar information on manufacturing sector were collected in the Economic Census 2001&2003. The 3 rd Economic Census of Bangladesh Was conducted during March-May,2013

Industrial Statistics: Current Practice (contd.) The main source of information of manufacturing sector in Bangladesh is the Survey of Manufacturing Industries (SMI). Bangladesh Bureau Of Statistics has been conducting the SMI since 1972-73 with irregular interval, the last one was conducted in 2012,the result of which is yet to finalize. The 2012 survey was conducted following Industrial Policy 2010.

Industrial Statistics: Current Practice (contd.) The main objective of SMI were to determine: Ownership status; Fixed assets by category ; Value and quantity of raw materials consumed ; Employment cost ; Operating expenses ;

Industrial Statistics: Current Practice (contd.) Inventories of physical assets ; Cost and quantity of fuel consumed ; Value of gross output ; Value added and indirect taxes ; Value of gross output etc.

Sampling Frame for SMI: Following the Economic Census 2001&2003 Business Registers were prepared in light of ISIC revision-3 for all establishment with person employed 10 and above. The register for manufacturing industries were used sampling frame for SMI.

Statistical Units: Large scale manufacturing establishments (other than handloom establishments) with 50+ persons; Medium scale manufacturing establishments (other than handloom establishments) with 10-49 persons; Handloom establishments with 10+ persons.

Cottage Industries Survey Following the new industrial policy 2010 a Survey on Cottage Industry was conducted in 2011. Cottage Industry is defined by those industries having fixed asset less than 0.5 million and employment size up to 09 persons including household members. Around 30,000 industries were covered. The preliminary result shows that there are more than 800,000 cottage industries in Bangladesh employing around 2.9 million people with GDP contribution of around 350,000 million BDT

Limitation and Challenges Lack of updated frame; Delay in providing data by the industries ; Non-cooperation in data collection ; Provide incomplete data ; Provide misleading data ; Provide no data at all ; Lack of regular budget from government exchequer to conduct the survey ; Inadequate manpower with proper skill.
