Arctic Synoptic Basin-wide Oceanography (ASBO) Quantify the current fresh water (both solid and liquid) and salt content of the Arctic Ocean Quantify the heat and freshwater exchanges between the ocean, atmosphere, sea ice and land within the Arctic basin and to surrounding ocean basins Provide an understanding of past changes in Arctic Ocean and North Atlantic salinity and temperature structure using numerical models, satellite data and historical datasets

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 In-ice thermistor chains Chain 1 Wholly within ice Diffusive heat flux measurements Chain 2 Across ice-air interface Position of interface for mass balance B/L current in ‘hot-wire anemometer’ mode Chain 3 Across ice-water interface Position of interface for mass balance B/L current in ‘hot-wire anemometer’ mode Possible use of Dallas ‘1-wire’ sensors Ease of cabling Poor accuracy, but good stability and resolution
