DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 A novel ice platform for IPY

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 Background Role of sea ice in climate change Several polar deployments over last few years Use of Iridium and Argos Opportunities during IPY 2007-8 Development of new platform for flux and hydrographic measurements

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 Global oceanic heat flux

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005

Arctic Synoptic Basin-wide Oceanography (ASBO) Quantify the current fresh water (both solid and liquid) and salt content of the Arctic Ocean Quantify the heat and freshwater exchanges between the ocean, atmosphere, sea ice and land within the Arctic basin and to surrounding ocean basins Provide an understanding of past changes in Arctic Ocean and North Atlantic salinity and temperature structure using numerical models, satellite data and historical datasets

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 Proposed IPY cruise tracks (2007)

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 Ice platforms Surface meteorology Vaisala WXT510 multi sensor ? SVP-B Net surface radiation fluxes Kipp & Zonen CNR net radiometers Heat flux through sea ice Ice mass balance Boundary layer currents Sub-ice CTDs GPS Web cam Iridium and Argos comms

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 In-ice thermistor chains Chain 1 Wholly within ice Diffusive heat flux measurements Chain 2 Across ice-air interface Position of interface for mass balance B/L current in ‘hot-wire anemometer’ mode Chain 3 Across ice-water interface Position of interface for mass balance B/L current in ‘hot-wire anemometer’ mode Possible use of Dallas ‘1-wire’ sensors Ease of cabling Poor accuracy, but good stability and resolution

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 In-ice thermistor chains

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 Sub-ice CTDs Use ‘HOMER’ profiler in inverted mode, or commercial system Profile depth set using GPS and bathymetric look-up table Data transfer by IR link (HOMER) or inductive modem

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 HOMER profiler

DBCP Workshop, Buenos Aires, October 2005 HOMER winch assembly
