What is a Mystery? Has a realistic setting All characters are involved in the problem or puzzle Has clues throughout the story (foreshadowing) Has a sequential orders Story includes distractions (Red Herrings) Has a realistic solution

What are the characteristics of a Fantasy? The major events could not happen Takes place in current time Realistic setting The problem is solved using magic or impossible strategies

Science Fiction The major events are believable Includes scientific facts Takes place now or in the near future Characters solve a problem using science

Historical Fiction The setting is a real time or place in the past Contains real historical events mixed with fictional events Vividly describes people, places, & events Follows a plot line Fictional and/or real characters, but all seem real
