Prepositions Scheme: Words before + preposition + preposition's object Squirrels live on the trees They indicate the relation between the words before and the object The object is always a noun or a noun group Usually used to indicate direction or position

Adverbs They modify or qualify a clause
There are many kinds of adverbs, such as: place, manner, time or frequency. For example: She sings badly (manner)

There are many prepositions which can also be adverbs, if they are used without an object
She ate outside (no object: it is an adverb) She ate outside the house (“the house” is the object: it is a preposition) Other examples of these words are: about, above, below, down, in, near, off, outside, up
