HOW WE STUDY STUDY SKILLS
2
WHERE TO STUDY? Where you study is totally up to you, but most people find they study best in a private, well lit place that is comfortable both in appearance and temperature. Also having a place with Internet available close by can be helpful.
3
-If you commute, perhaps transferring your notes to audiotapes or carpooling with classmates so during the commute (or stuck in tunnel traffic) you can go over the material.
4
- Some people can study best with complete quite, but others can do well with soft music or “white noise” to cover-up environmental sounds (like traffic or people talking).
5
WHEN TO STUDY? - Most of us have busy lives, families, jobs, etc. so study time can sometimes be difficult. But, it is important to try to find time to study the material. It is said you need a couple of hours for every hour of time spent in class…but honestly, that could be unrealistic for most since a lot of our material is hands-on.
6
Reviewing the material right after it is first given is a great strategy to help you ingrain the information that was just given. After class, look over your notes, perhaps sit with a classmate or two and go over the notes taken to clarify and see instructor soon after the class if you have any questions (we are here to help!!)
7
DO YOUR READING for the class the night before and before you come into class! This will help you be a more active member of the class the next day and help you retain the information even more. As instructors, we can tell the students that did the reading assignments the night before.
8
- Hold review sessions with classmates – I know I stress this a lot, but it is really good to get together and go over material.
9
Listen to your body! Don’t deprive yourself of sleep and beware of being too comfortable while studying (can cause you to fall asleep). Some people study best in the evening or night, others may find they do better in the earlier morning. We all have busy lives, so really make sure those around you understand you need personal time to study!
10
“LEARNING DIFFERENTLY” - In culinary school things are much different than in “normal” colleges and schools. Here we are learning skills that are going to enhance our careers and goals. I have found that most students who attend culinary school learn differently. Most students are tactile and learn from doing, which is actually a smaller proportion of the population than the other ways of learning.
11
Knowing that you are easily distracted or can’t sit still for long are signs that you will have to work on finding the right place, time and pace to suit you.
12
If this all describes you, it is key that you have a study space and outline that aids you in keeping to goals and deadlines. Set- up a time line, mark a calendar, anything to make it so you make time to study. A quiet space away from distractions is a big factor! But, as we all know anyone can make ANYTHING a distraction, including a pen!
13
ASK ! If you know you learn differently, please try to inform the instructor and they will do their best to help you out or provide different format tests and quizzes for you.
14
SOME THOUGHTS Answer the following questions scoring 1-5 1 = Strongly disagree 2 = Disagree 3 = Don’t know 4 = Agree 4 = Strongly agree Total your marks
15
WHERE ARE YOU AT THIS MOMENT? 1. I know which teaching styles match my learning preferences 2. When I study, I use a variety of methods to learn new material 3. I don’t know what my strengths and weaknesses are as a learner 4. I have devised study strategies that capitalize on my learning experience 5. My personality type has no impact on my study strategies 6. There is little point in trying to improve my weaker learning styles 7. I have tried using different learning styles in my studies in the past. 8.I do not know how I learn differently when I am seeing, hearing, or doing. 9. There is no way to use my strengths in music, sports or relationships to help me learn 10. When learning something new. I try to incorporate what I see with what I hear and do.
