2 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13-1135 Submission Introduction to Channel Model Documents HEW usage models include both indoor and outdoor usage models [1] –High density of STAs – Indoor –High density of APs (low/medium density of STAs per AP) – Indoor –High density of APs and high density of STAs per AP – Outdoor Both indoor and outdoor channel model need to be considered –Indoor channel models TGn (IEEE 802.11-03/940r4) and TGac (IEEE 802.11-09/0308r12) channel model documents provided SISO, MIMO and MU-MIMO channels models. Principle: take advantage of well-established TGn and TGac channel models –Outdoor channel model Three outdoor channel model proposals have been proposed in HEW (summary in following slides) Current principle: adopt outdoor channel model from other organizations instead of developing outdoor channel model based on measurements from IEEE 802.11 working group. For deployments that co-locate WLAN in Macro cellular cells the Urban Macro (UMa) channel may be considered. ITU models are applicable for up to 100MHz signal BW, 2-6GHz center frequency and outdoor and indoor environments. 4 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13-1135 Submission Comparison of Outdoor Channel Models In [7], Kaushik (Samsung) provided a detailed comparison between ITU channel models and WINNER II channel models –The modeling methodology and channel construction between WINNER II and ITU are the same ITU channel models are a sub-set of WINNER II channel models –The values for the parameters are slightly different Path loss models for both IITU and WINNER II are similar Quantitative difference (outage capacity) for Urban NLOS case is small Two models are different only in urban LOS case –Conclusion: Not much difference between ITU UMi channel models and WINNER II channel models. Given the fact that ITU channel models are developed based on WINNER II, let us choose ITU channel models as HEW outdoor channel models. Sep 2013 Slide 4

5 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13-1135 Submission UMi or UMa (Environments) Sep 2013 Slide 5 Definitions of UMi environment and UMa environment –Urban Micro cell environment: In urban micro-cell scenario the height of both the antenna at the BS and that at the UT is assumed to be well below the tops of surrounding buildings. The channel model for urban micro-cell scenario is called urban micro (UMi). –Urban Macro cell environment: In typical urban macro-cell scenario, the mobile station is located outdoors at street level and the fixed base station clearly above the surrounding building heights. The channel model for urban macro-cell scenario is called urban macro (UMa). Difference: –The main difference is the height of the BS antenna. Higher elevation antennas increases the channel delay spread - about 2x factor between UMi and UMa.

6 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13-1135 Submission UMi and UMa (Deployments) WiFi is increasingly being added to small cell (Pico and Femto) deployments of cellular carriers, cable providers and in certain hotspots e.g. stadiums. WiFi may also be added to carriers’ Macro cells in some cases: –In lieu of Pico cells (where Pico locations are not available or costly to acquire) –Providing broadband wireless access in emerging markets –Simple add-on to existing cellular infrastructure. Note however that even when co-located in a Macro cell, the WiFi coverage is quite smaller than cellular, typically due to regulatory limits (sometimes as low as 20dBm). Hence the intent here is not ubiquitous coverage as achieved by cellular but rather a hotspot coverage leveraging existing Macro cells. Sep 2013 Slide 6

7 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13-1135 Submission Proposal on outdoor channel model and requirements Sep 2013 Slide 7 Selection Rationale –It will be unfortunate if future outdoor deployments of HEW devices are strictly limited to certain antenna heights – in practice no one will check that aspect accurately. –On the other hand side, re-designing WiFi to optimally support Macro deployments may be a stretch considering the majority of deployment scenarios described in [4] We have already designed 11ah to support Macro deployments by smart grid companies (albeit for very low traffic requirements). Design Criteria –HEW design shall ensure that WiFi works equally well under UMi as it does for indoor scenarios –HEW design should ensure that WiFi still works under UMa (connection is supported but reduced performance is possible)
