Later, with the Act of Union of 1800 the island of Ireland became part of the country, so the name changed to "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland". In 1927, when the Republic of Ireland gained its independence, the country received its current name "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
