2.  Lewis & Clark’s Expedition was started at St. Louis, Missouri on May 21, 1804  They left with 33 other men  They were sent President Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase  The goal was to reach the Pacific Ocean(about 2,120 miles)

3.  To find a water route linking the Columbia and Missouri Rivers  To link the Pacific Ocean to Mississippi River System  To give access to western land  To find new species of plants and animals

4.  Became expert hunter in Virginia  Worked for President Jefferson who had him trained in Geography, Mineralogy, and Astronomy.  Was personal secretary of Jefferson  Kept journals that give us the best description of the west in the 1800s  Lewis committed suicide at a Nashville inn on October 11, 1809

5.  Chosen personally by Lewis to be the Co-Captain in the expedition because of army background  Army friend of Lewis  6 feet muscular body made him tough explorer  Leadership and artistic ability helped the expedition greatly  Experience in state militia taught him to  Build forts  Draw maps  Lead expedition through enemy territory  Died at the home of his eldest son on September 1, 1838

6.  Only woman of the 33 members of the expedition  Was brother of Chief Cameahwait who helped lead the expedition  Served as translator and peacemaker between explorers and Indians  Had 2 kids, one of which was on the expedition  Was 16 years old during the expedition  She died at 25 years old due to serious illness

7.  Shoshones-tribe that kidnapped Sacagawea  Teton Sioux- Had their only real fight with the explorers because the tribe felt threatened

8.  Goal was to explore southwest boundary of Louisiana Purchase  Another goal was to find source of the Mississippi River  Much more unprepared than Lewis and Clark’s expedition
