3  Grand county was named after the River that flows through the area. This River was first known as Grand River but today is known as Colorado River.  The main city is Moab  The economy of the area comes from tourism, mining, agriculture, and livestock.  Video Video

4  In the 1300’s, the Mormons tried to settle the area and failed.  The first successful settlement was by cattle ranchers and cowboys. Castle Valley in Grand County

5 Castle Valley is a tiny town with homes spread out far from one another. It has a population of about 450 people. There are no stores or gas stations. This town is an example of the life in Grand County

6 GrandCountyFacts  Pinhook Battle - Cowboys and Utes fought in 1881 in the La Sal Mountains.  Atomic Energy Commission – They paid a high amount of money for uranium which began a uranium boom causing the population to grow by 300 %.  Anasazi people – There is traces left of their culture by cliff homes and pictographs painted on rock walls.

7  Grand County is most well known for Arches National park which contains the famous Delicate Arch.  The land of geologic wonders brings tourists to hike, bike, river raft, and ride. Arches National Park Website
