3 The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is the South Carolina State Reptile.

4 Basic Facts Sea Turtles: are streamlined have flippers to propel them grow larger than most land turtles Sea Turtles Eat: crab whelks sponges marine plants jellies, shrimp sea urchins fish Almost anything!

5 The top of the loggerheads shell is called the carapace while the bottom is called the plastron.

7 Conservation Sea turtles have been around for millions of years Presently they are threatened and in danger of extinction

8 While at the NC Aquarium, we saw… A sea turtle skeleton And a swimming loggerhead

9 Sea Turtles have bones! The Head The Flipper

10 Sea turtles lay eggs in a clutch

11 Out of the Nest Loggerheads lay about 110-120 eggs Two inch hatchlings leave the nest at night They must cross a dangerous beach full of: ghost crabs raccoons litter & other hazards lights also confuse turtles

12 Humans are very near the nesting sites! An actual turtle nest! A Sand Sea Turtle!

13 YOU CAN HELP! Turn off or shield ocean-side lights during nesting season Pick up trash Remove beach chairs and other obstacles Keep pets and children away from nesting sites Report nesting activity, injuries, or turtle deaths
