1. Overcoming Educational Barriers (OEB) DHHS HRSA Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant, #D19HP19031, 7/1/2010-6/30/2013 Terry Viau, PhD and Kendra Elam, BSN, RN Introduction: The overall aim of the OEB project is to overcome educational barriers that prevent disadvantaged students from successfully participating in the MSU BSN program. Increasing the number of disadvantaged students, including underrepresented minority students, who graduate from the MSU BSN program, pass the NCLEX-RN and practice in Michigan responds to the need for a more representative workforce and increased access to culturally competent healthcare for underserved populations. Methods: Results: More than 200 middle school participants each year 8 FNC graduates admitted to the BSN 34 students admitted to the BSN through the early admit ACCESS program First cohort of early admit students will begin clinical coursework SS13 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate for participating BSN graduates Career Fairs - Middle Schools Future Nurse Clubs - High Schools Early Admit ACCESS - BSN Students Retention Program - BSN Students Best Practices: Use of student created video & social media (to increase high school student participation) Use of intrusive tutoring/advising to support BSN students (e.g., tutor log) Mandatory summer school attendance with tuition funding for early admit ACCESS students (to support timely completion of prerequisite coursework)

3. OEB Project Methods: 1.Increase interest in and academic preparation for nursing in partnership with Lansing School District: hold career fairs in partner middle schools establish Future Nurse Clubs (FNC) in partner high schools hold one-week residential summer camp for FNC students

OEB Project Methods: 2.Increase admission of disadvantaged students, including underrepresented minority students, to the MSU BSN program by establishing an early admit option: competitive admission to ACCESS program as incoming freshmen guaranteed seat in nursing courses if academic and program requirements are met

13. OEB Project Methods: 3.Retain disadvantaged students (ACCESS and traditional admits) in the MSU BSN program through graduation and successful completion of the NCLEX-RN: Provide tutoring, mentoring and other academic support Provide stipends and scholarships

16. OEB Project Outcomes: Middle/high school student participation has exceeded expectations. Several FNC graduates have been admitted to the MSU BSN program. 34 of the BSN participating students were admitted through the early admit option. All of the participating students who were traditionally admitted and graduated passed the NCLEX-RN. The first cohort of early admit students (Fall 2010) will begin clinical nursing coursework in Spring 2013.
