1. Yet the state of Guanajuato’s school attendance rate is one of the lowest in the country. Access to higher education is improving in México Rural students in particular have little opportunity to study

2. Jóvenes ¡Adelante! was founded in 2001 by a small group of volunteers in San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato. Our mission is to provide university scholarships to outstanding Mexican high school graduates who are without sufficient resources to continue their education.

3. To-date, more than 200 students from ranchos, the countryside, central San Miguel and Guanajuato have attended university as a result of support from people like yourself.

4. Students like Yarib who studied international business and who was able to work in Norway thanks to the support of her Jóvenes ¡Adelante! mentor. Delia studied business at the University of Guanajuato, where she played on the women’s soccer team and acted in the mime group. She now works in the Jóvenes ¡Adelante! office as the financial records manager.

5. Currently, 89 Jóvenes ¡Adelante! students are enrolled in 23 different universities in México. They study engineering, psychology, tourism, medicine, architecture, accounting and other subjects.

6. The scholarships come from sponsorships, donations, grants, and fundraising events More than 90% of all funds raised go directly to student support A scholarship helps with the costs of university enrollment, computers, books and supplies, and living expenses

The challenges for our students are many Living in the city Being the first in a family (or town) to attend university Competing with students who don’t have the same financial or familial challenges Being a provider for the rest of the family Each student is assigned a mentor Who may be a current or retired professor, teacher, professional or someone committed to our cause. More and more Mexicans – including former scholarship recipients – serve as mentors.

8. Mentors meet with students once a month to check in with them, sometimes in person and sometimes remotely via programs such as Skype and Facetime Sometimes they meet to share some quality ice cream time together Mentors serve as the point person should her or his student need any kind of help

9. Success is within their reach So far, more than 80 students have earned a college degree with the support of Jóvenes ¡Adelante! Today Jóvenes ¡Adelante! alumni work professionally in México within their chosen fields Often Jóvenes ¡Adelante! graduates return to their communities to help others For example, one student became a lawyer and created a legal aid organization that provides free legal advice for people in her community
