Improving follow through by weekend PT/OT staff on seeing recommended burn patients Team Members: Jennifer Smith, MSPT Carolyn Aranya, OTR/L Cheryl O’Riordon, MPD OTR/L Richard L. Gamelli, MD

Opportunity Statement: - An opportunity exists to improve follow through by weekend PT/OT staff on attempting to see the high priority for weekend burn treatment patient population. - From December 2001 through April 2002, 7 recommended weekend burn patients out of 64 (10.9) were seen by Physical Therapy staff and 6 recommended weekend burn patients out of 122 (4.9%) were seen by Occupational Therapy staff.

Desired Outcome: - To improve weekend PT/OT staff’s follow through on attempting to see burn patients with a high priority for weekend treatments. - Improved documentation on staffs’ treatment attempts.

Most Likely Causes Identified: - Lack of sufficient education to weekend staff on high priority of burn patients in weekend treatment protocol. - Poor visual differentiation of high priority burn patients on weekend patient list. - Less than efficient planning of weekend treatment recommendations by burn therapists.

Solutions Implemented: - Re-education with staff on priority status of burn patients and the importance of documenting any treatment attempt (team meetings and the written protocol). - Highlighting burn patient names of weekend patient list to ensure staff recognize all burn patients

Solutions Implemented: (continued) - Consolidating PT/OT weekend treatment recommendations so only PT or OT were provided on any given weekend day to reduce duplication of services by PT and OT - Development of a monitor to track unattempted/ undocumented treatment of services

Results and Analysis; Overall percentage of unattempted/undocumented weekend burn treatments decreased from 10.9% to 3% for Physical Therapy and 4.9% to 0% for Occupational Therapy as monitored weekly from December 2001 through December 2002.

Next Steps: - Continue educating staff on the priority status of burn patients for weekend treatments. - Continue policy of either PT or OT treatments per weekend day. - Resume weekly monitor as needed to ensure continued improvement
