3
BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity Aim and goal of the exercise l Aim: to develop the skills to recognize nature-based solutions to common (spatial) planning challenges l Ultimate goal: maximize the rational implementation of multifunctional-land use and co-benefits between nature conservation and socio-economic objectives

5
BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity l Four groups l Four landscape situations –Rural village –Upland regional park –Coastal port –Urban setting [drawings from www.biodiversityplanningtoolkit.com]
6
BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity Three planning steps l Step 1. What do we have? –Create map –Assess socio-economic and ecological values l Step 2. What do we want? –Define policies and planning objective l Step 3. How do we get there? –Assess alternatives, opportunities and constraints –Use ecosystems approach
7

BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity What do we want? (1) l Define nature conservation policies, including: –Protection of biodiversity –No net loss of biodiversity (compensation, mitigation) –Promote ecosystem based solutions –Identify opportunities for restoration –Reflect climate change adaptation and mitigation –Integrate communication and public participation
14
BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity What do we want? (2) l Local (sustainable) development, such as: –Building houses –Reduce flood risk –Anticipate sea level rise –Improve urban public health and well-being –Increase generation and use of renewable energies –Improve transport infrastructure, etc l Development proposal given by the trainers
15
BD SKILLS – Skills for Local Biodiversity How do we get there? l Review development request against the policies l List possible bottlenecks, conflicts and impacts l Discuss alternatives, especially biodiversity and ecosystem services co-benefits l Review the map to analyse possible siting and impacts
