© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org Sustainable procurement makes use of existing laws to conserve biodiversity  Good procurement starts with a good title  Make use of the „subject matter“ and send a strong signal to the market that you only want sustainable products, services and works

© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org Economic benefits  Why to pay less and as a result to get even less? – Did you know that organic meat only looses 10-20% of its weight compared to non-organic meat that looses 40-60%?

© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org Boost sustainable entrepreneurship  Apply cradle to cradle  Encourage renewable resources economics  Drive ecodesign  Bio-based products (e.g. plastics)

© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org Food  Aim: nature conservation  Measure: organic agriculture and food production  Certification (e.g.):  Procurement approach: criteria of  Certification & contracts: above certifications or equivalent  Who does it: Rome, Barcelona, Malmö, Freiburg, etc.

© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org Timber  Aim: climate change mitigation and conservation of biological diversity  Measure: sustainable forest management  Certification (e.g.):  Procurement approach: criteria of  Certification & contracts: above certifications or equivalent  Who does it: London, Vancouver, Zagreb, etc.

© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org Bio-based packaging  Aim: reduce waste and use of natural resources  Measure: compostable, bio-based packaging (100% recycled paper, cardboard / >85% bio-based plastics)  Certification (e.g.):  Procurement approach: criteria of  Certification & contracts: above certifications or equivalent  Who does it: Toronto, Hamburg, Barcelona, etc.

© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org Outlook  Greening supply chains  Monetarising emissions such as NO x, SO 2, CO 2, etc. in the award of tenders  Drive innovation (e.g. Self-Healing Concrete Healing Concrete – Bacteria deposit dense layers of calcium carbonate and other minerals on concrete structures sealing off green house gases or Algal Wastewater processing – Using bioreactors that combine bacteria and algae)

© ICLEI 2013 www.iclei.org ICLEI believes that mainstreaming sustainable supply chains by using the purchasing power of procurement will make the difference – join us on this mission! www.sustainable-procurement.org www.procuraplus.org ICLEI European Secretariat Philipp Tepper procurement@iclei.org Tel. +49 / (0)761 368 920 Moving ahead
