2 NASA Mission Summary … 1 of 3 Foundational Missions – those precursors initiated ahead of the 2007 National Research Council (NRC) Decadal Survey o GLORY (Nov 2010) – Aerosol polarimetry, total solar irradiance o Aquarius (Apr 2011) – Sea Surface Salinity o NPP (Sep 2011) – Operational polar weather and climate o LDCM (Dec 2012) – Landsat-8 in series for land imaging o GPM Core (Jul 2013) – Global Precipitation Decadal Survey Tier 1 Missions – the first group of missions identified by the NRC in its 2007 Decadal Survey o SMAP (Nov 2014) – Soil Moisture o ICESat-2 (Oct 2015) – Ice thickness, Vegetation Height … ICESat-1 follow-on o DESDynI (Nov 2017) – Earth deformation, vegetation height, biomass o CLARREO-1 (Nov 2017) – Spectral IR radiance CLARREO-2 (2020) – Spectral UV radiance Plans for 4 total CLARREO satellites

3 NASA Mission Summary … 2 of 3 Decadal Survey Accelerated Tier 2 Missions – the first of the Tier 2 missions identified by the NRC. Others will launch post-2020 which is beyond the current planning horizon for mission development. A significant investment in mission-related technology is being made by NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office for most of the Decadal Survey missions, including all those in Tiers 2 and 3 o ASCENDS (2019) – Carbon Dioxide laser o SWOT (2020) – Lake levels, Ocean topography Decadal Survey Venture Class Missions – The NRC Decadal Survey recommended that NASA implement a program for smaller-scale, principal-investigator led missions; the first three opportunities for these were in airborne missions (2009 solicitation, 2010 selection), a small satellite mission, and spaceflight-ready orbital instrument development (solicitations under development).

4 NASA Mission Summary … 3 of 3 Climate Missions – a new class of missions associated with the FY11 budget request, which calls for NASA to provide follow-on observational capability for a small number of environmental parameters for which NASA initiated US research observations and for which near-term transition to operational partners is not expected o OCO-2 (Feb 2013) – Carbon Dioxide … replacement for OCO failure o SAGE-3 (May 2014) – Ozone, Aerosols, Water Vapor … Space Station o PACE (2018) – Aerosols, Ocean Color … preliminary for full ACE o GRACE Follow-On (2016) – Ocean currents and mass o OCO-3 (instrument) – Carbon Dioxide … no mission defined Other Missions (not covered in the CGMS paper) CLARREO-3,4, HyspIRI (hyperspectral), GEO-CAPE (GEO air quality), ACE, GPM Constellation, LIST (altimeter), PATH (all-weather T,P,RH), GRACE-2, SCLP (snow processes), GACM (atmospheric profiling), 3D-WINDS (tropospheric wind LIDAR).
