3 Parts of Speech Noun – a person, place, thing, or idea Mr. Knight, school, flowers, Imperialism Adjective – a word that describes a noun Hairy fists, a greedy man, lovely flowers, terrifying armies

5 Similes and Description Simile – a comparison of one noun to another using ‘like’ or ‘as’ Ex. Dwight Howard is as tall as a building. Ex. The guard is like a hawk, watching your every move.

6 The House on Mango Street Take out a separate piece of paper. 1.As we read ‘Hairs,’ find three interesting pieces of description, including at least one simile and one adjective-noun combo. 2.Who is the person telling the story (narrator)? 3.How do you think the narrator feels about her family? Her self? Her mom? How do you know?

7 Your Turn Using ‘Hairs,’ as an example, describe your own family. Use descriptive language to describe what they look like AND their personality. Use at least two similes and two adjective- noun combos.

9 Parts of Speech Verb – an action word, the ‘engine’ of a sentence Adverb – a word that describes a verb or adjective Ex. He ran fast. Ex. He jumped impossibly far. Ex. He landed awkwardly.

10 Your Turn Look at the comic. With your shoulder partner, write a sentence for each frame, describing the action. Your sentences should include: – A subject (I, he, she, they, etc.) – A strong verb (hurl, glimpse, tackle, etc.) – An adverb

11 Share Your Story Presenters: Show your comic to another set of partners. Take turns reading your sentences. Listeners: Write down at least two strong verbs and two strong adverbs. Add them to your ‘Action’ in your IADD word bank. SWITCH

13 “There Was an Old Woman…” Read the vignette. Find an example of each IADD and tell what it shows about that character. What is the theme of the vignette? How do the kids’ character show this theme?

14 Parts of Speech Do a madlib with your partner. Switch. Write your own madlib. You may: – Make one brand new OR – Use the first three paragraphs of “There Was an Old Woman…”
