7. Receiving Your Tablet Take care of the Tablet Tablet Computer Protection Plan & Student Pledge documents must be signed & Returned. Tablets Distributed Each Fall Tablet Stays With You Until You Graduate Tablet Stays w/ Family As Much As Possible Tablets will be collected periodically for maintenance.

8. Taking Care of Your Tablet General Precautions No food or drink near machine Use Cords, cables, flash drives carefully Carry Tablets closed, not open. Shut down tablets to save battery No stickers, writing, drawing or labels Do not leave Tablet in your car or an unsupervised area. Keep battery charged for school each day.

9. Taking Care of Your Tablet Carrying the Tablet Always use the protective case Don’t put much else in case—pressure on screen Screen latched “in” when put away Tablet “off” or in “standby” mode before putting it in case Stylus put away before storing Tablet

10. Taking Care of Your Tablet Screen Care Do not lean on the top of the Tablet when it is closed. Do not place anything near the Tablet that could put pressure on the screen. Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover. Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, or disks). Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth (provided). Do not wear jewelry on the wrist or hand while using the Tablet, as these items may scratch the screen.

11. Using Your Tablet at School Tablets are intended to use at school each day Students must be responsible to bring their tablet to all classes, unless specifically advised not to do so by their teacher.

12. Using Your Tablet at School Loaners may be available while tablet is undergoing repair. Bring tablet to school fully charged each day. Repeat violations of this policy will result in disciplinary action.

13. Using Your Tablet at School Screensavers No inappropriate media Presence of inappropriate screensaver will result in disciplinary action. Sound must be muted at all times. Printers will be installed, but paper usage should be significantly reduced. Most assignments will be submitted and returned electronically to and from teacher.

14. Managing Your Files & Saving Your Work Saving to the Home Directory Keep files organized Automatically backed up and saved Saving Data to Removable Storage Devices Each student will be provided one 512 MB flash drive to backup work. If flash drive is lost, additional flash drives may be purchased from school for $10.00 Student’s are responsible for backing up files. Lost work is not an acceptable excuse for not submitting work.

15. Software Machine level of control Students (and teachers) will not be allowed to install applications or download anything Classroom Management Software Virus Protection Home firewall protection will be installed. State email accounts & WebCT Communicate with teachers and other students

16. Software Inspection Students will be selected at random to provide their tablet for inspection Reimaging Tablet If problem can’t be fixed within 5 minutes, then a loaner tablet will be issued if available and the students tablet will be reimaged. Any music, instructional games, or programs must be approved by Network Administrator Tablets are not for playing unapproved games.

17. Guidelines for Use Primary use is as an educational tool Students will be expected to arrive at school every day with their Tablet and a fully charged battery Much like their textbooks and notebooks, students will need their Tablet for everyday use. Students leaving their tablet at home will need to phone a parent to bring their Tablet to school

18. Email and Games You fail a 9 weeks course don’t plan on having them next 9 weeks Earn…them…don’t abuse them 7/8 no games and no email.

19. Consequences for Misuse The student who is issued the Tablet is responsible at all times for its appropriate use. Tablets, e-mail, network usage, and all stored files shall not be considered confidential and may be monitored at any time.

20. Protecting & Storing Your Tablet Tablets Left in Unsupervised Areas Students will be expected to have their Tablets with them in their carrying case at all times, or to have them secure in their lockers, with the locker locked. Tablets left unsupervised are an easy target for theft. Unsupervised tablets will be confiscated by staff and taken to the principal.

21. Consequences for Misuse Tablet Use Violation This is generally defined as using the Tablet for non-educational purposes, such as: Accessing or sending offensive or threatening material Promoting or soliciting for illegal activities Violating plagiarism rules or copyright laws Using the school network for commercial or financial gain Bullying or harassing another individual Sending or subscribing to mass email servers, or generating “spam”

22. Consequences for Misuse Network Violations These are things that compromise the integrity of the network for all users, such as: Attempting to log on to the Internet or network as a system administrator Sending, accessing, uploading, downloading, or distributing pornographic or sexually explicit materials Installing, enabling, launching, or creating programs that interfere with the performance of the network, internet, or hardware technology resources Creating, uploading, or transmitting computer viruses Attempting to defeat computer or network security

23. Consequences for Misuse Violations may result in a loss of access to technology resources. Additional disciplinary action may be determined at the building level in line with existing practice regarding inappropriate language or behavior. When applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved. Tablet Use Violation Consequence 1Suspension of Tablet Privileges for 5 days 2Suspension of Tablet Privileges for 20 days 3Suspension of Tablet Privileges for remainder of semester or 20 days, whichever is greater. 4Suffer the consequences at the discretion of the administration

24. Cost of Replacement Students will be entirely responsible for cost of replacement or repair for computers lost, damaged intentionally, or with reckless disregard. 25. Tablet Damage Students who have recorded 3 or more instances of accidental damage may be asked to check their Tablet in to the Help Desk after School. Tablets may be checked out again before classes begin the next day.

26. Computer Protection Options The Doland School District recognizes that with the implementation of the Tablet initiative here is a need to protect the investment by both the District and the Student/Parent. There are three areas of protection: Warranty Accidental damage protection School Protection Plan

27. Computer Protection Options Warranty Gateway warrants the Tablets from defects in materials and workmanship. This limited warranty covers normal use, mechanical breakdown or faulty construction and will provide replacement parts necessary to repair the Tablet or Tablet replacement. The Gateway warranty does not warrant against damage caused by misuse, abuse, accidents or computer viruses.

28. Computer Protection Options Accidental Damage Protection The Doland School District has purchased through Gateway coverage to protect the Tablets against accidental damage Things such as liquid spills, accidental drops, and power surges Gateway will assess the Tablet damage and repair or replace the machine at no cost if the damage is determined to be accidental, infrequent, and within the protection guidelines

29. Computer Protection Options Accidental Damage Protection This coverage does not provide for damage caused by fire, theft, loss, misuse, intentional or frequent damage or cosmetic damage Incidences of damage after the 3rd occurrence will be deemed as carelessness. The student will be charged a fee based on the schedule described in the Use of Technology Resources Policy

30. Computer Protection Options School Protection Plan Tablets that are stolen, lost or damaged by fire are not covered by the Gateway Warranty or the Accidental Damage Protection There are three options that are available for these types of losses, and the Student/Parent must commit to one

31. Computer Protection Options Protection Options Option 1: No Protection Plan You agree to pay the replacement cost of the Tablet at cost (approximate $1,400) should the Tablet be stolen, lost, or damaged by fire.

Computer Protection Options Protection Options Option 2: Personal Insurance You will cover the Tablet under your own insurance policy, and in the case of a theft, loss or damage by fire, you agree to pay the District the amount received from your insurance company plus any additional amount needed to cover the Tablet replacement.

33. Computer Protection Options Protection Options Option 3: School District Protection You choose to pay the school district an annual protection payment for coverage of theft, loss or damage by fire to the Tablet. $50.00 non-refundable annually for each Tablet.

34. Computer Protection Options Protection Options Option 3: School District Protection This protection coverage has a $200.00 additional charge per occurrence. This annual coverage begins upon receipt of the payment and ends at the conclusion of each school year. In cases of theft, vandalism and other criminal acts, a police report, or in the case of fire, a fire report MUST be filed by the student or parent for the protection coverage to take place. A copy of the police/fire report must be provided to the principal’s office.

35. Computer Protection Options Protection Options Before the student can be issued a Tablet, one of these insurance options must be checked on the Tablet Computer Protection Agreement.

Tech Help Room Resources Tech Help Room Staff will be available during the school day to assist students with a variety of issues: Hardware maintenance and repairs Password identification User account support Operating system or software configuration support Application information Re-imaging hard drives Updates and software installations Coordination of warranty repairs Distribution of loaner Tablets

37. And Finally… What can you expect from your teachers: All teachers are working towards integrating the Tablets into their lessons Do not expect 100% Tablet use in every classroom Classes will be outfitted with projection screens, and some will be using smartboard technology
